Monumental Kahn.

Abstract

[ES] Louis Kahn es considerado uno de los grandes maestros del siglo XX y su obra arquitectónica se conoce en su práctica totalidad. Sin embargo, la extensa obra pictórica del arquitecto estadounidense suele quedar en el olvido. Interesado en el dibujo y el arte desde su infancia, Kahn viajará por Europa en tres ocasiones, produciendo durante dichos viajes una colección de dibujos de extraordinario interés. Gran parte de sus dibujos y pinturas están catalogadas en el libro The paintings and sketches of Louis I. Kahn (1991), de J. Hotchstim. Desgraciadamente, la localización de los mismos es en algunos casos, ambigua o inexistente.

Este trabajo se centra en analizar, organizar y ubicar los dibujos de Louis Kahn en Egipto durante el viaje de 1951, recorrido menos estudiado que los realizados en el sur de Europa y esencial para el desarrollo de su obra arquitectónica. El resultado de la investigación realizada en este Trabajo Final de Grado será un conjunto de mapas inéditos y originales con la ubicación exacta de los dibujos, así como una serie de tablas y textos que proporcionen información específica sobre cada apunte en concreto. Se pretende dar a conocer la obra pictórica de Kahn, tanto por su interés, técnica y estética, como por la indudable facilidad que brinda a la hora de entender su arquitectura. Esta infografía podrá permitir relacionar la obra de Kahn - construida o no - con la realidad retratada en sus dibujos, facilitando la comprensión de la influencia de la arquitectura monumental egipcia en sus proyectos y sirviendo de base para futuras investigaciones

[EN] Louis Kahn is considered one of the great masters of the 20th century and his architectural work is practically all known. However, the extensive pictorial work of the american architect is often forgotten. Interested in drawing and art since his childhood, Kahn will travel around Europe three times, producing during these trips an extraordinarily interesting collection of drawings. Much of his drawings and paintings are cataloged in the book The paintings and sketches of Louis I. Kahn (1991), by J. Hotchstim. Unfortunately, their location is in some cases, ambiguous or non-existent.

This work focuses on analyzing, organizing and locating Louis Kahn's drawings in Egypt during the 1951 trip, a less studied route than those made in southern Europe and a trip essential for the development of his architectural work. The result of the research carried out in this Final Graduation Project will be a set of unpublished and original maps with the exact location of the drawings, as well as a series of tables and texts that provide specific information on each note. The aim is to make Kahn's pictorial work known, not only for its interest, technique and aesthetics, but for the undoubted ease it offers when it comes to understanding its architecture. This infographic will allow Kahn's work - built or unbuilt - to be related to the reality portrayed in his drawings, facilitating the understanding of the influence of Egyptian monumental architecture on his projects and serving as the basis for future research.
