dc.description.abstract [EN] Reduced-scale models have been used for many purposes in most disciplines of civil and building engineering. They helped master builders to communicate to craftsmen the design of complex timber roof trusses and bridges and of large masonry structures. Since the early-18th century, they have been used by engineering scientists to develop better understanding of engineering phenomena which, in turn, has benefited designers. They have also been used directly by engineers to help design large and unprecedented constructions when it is felt that the engineering theory available was inadequate. Such measurement models have been used since the mid-18th century and their use has made a significant contribution to progress in engineering. The paper argues that the contribution of measurement models to achieving progress is at least as significant as engineering science which, transitionally, has been portrayed as the main stimulus for progress. es_ES
