Searching for biodegradable packaging for organic citrus fruits exports from Spain to Sweden A feasibility study

Abstract

[EN] The export of Spanish citrus fruits is highly demanded by other European countries, thanks to the good climate and the optimal conditions for its cultivation, Valencia has one of the largest areas dedicated to the cultivation of oranges. Packaging is currently becoming more responsible and environmentally friendly, as nowadays packaging is mainly made of plastics. Plastic is a problem that is affecting the planet at an ever-increasing rate. In this project we want to study if it is possible to find an ecological and biodegradable alternative to plastic in orange packaging. Currently, millions of tons of orange waste are discarded in Spain without any other ecologic alternative. The project aim is to study the feasibility of achieving a biodegradable packaging for citrus, using orange peel waste to promote the circular economy. One of the achievements would be to evaluate the resistant to shocks during the transport, as well as keeping the product fresh and undamaged during the shipping to the country of destination, in this case Sweden. For this purpose, research has been carried out on how the Swedish market works and the regulations for the export and import of citrus fruits from Spain as a European Union country. Different alternative bioorganic materials have been studied to verify the best final option. Prototypes have been made with orange peel paste to check the functionality of the material to be consider as a feasibility material that can be used in the future for the citrus packaging industry.

[ES] La exportación de cítricos españoles es muy demandada por otros países europeos, gracias al buen clima y las condiciones óptimas para su cultivo, Valencia cuenta con una de las mayores superficies dedicadas al cultivo de naranjas. En la actualidad, los envases son cada vez más responsables y respetuosos con el medio ambiente, ya que hoy en día los envases están hechos principalmente de plástico. El plástico es un problema que está afectando al planeta a un ritmo cada vez mayor. En este proyecto queremos estudiar si es posible encontrar una alternativa ecológica y biodegradable al plástico en los envases de naranja. Actualmente, millones de toneladas de residuos de naranja se desechan en España sin otra alternativa ecológica. El objetivo del proyecto es estudiar la viabilidad de conseguir un envase biodegradable para cítricos, utilizando residuos de piel de naranja para fomentar la economía circular. Uno de los logros sería evaluar la resistencia a golpes durante el transporte, así como mantener el producto fresco y sin daños durante el envío al país de destino, en este caso Suecia. Para ello se ha investigado cómo funciona el mercado sueco y la normativa para la exportación e importación de cítricos desde España como país de la Unión Europea. Se han estudiado diferentes materiales bioorgánicos alternativos para comprobar la mejor opción final. Se han realizado prototipos con pasta de piel de naranja para comprobar la funcionalidad del material a considerar como un material de viabilidad que pueda ser utilizado en el futuro para la industria del envasado de cítricos.
