Abstract

[EN] Juan Herreros is a PHd M. Architect and a Chair Professor of Architectural Design for the School of Architecture (ETSAM) at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). He has taught at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York, the School of Architecture at Princeton University, the Architectural Association of London, the Ecole d Architecture at EPFL in Lausanne, the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, the Aalto University of Helsinki, the School of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana, as well as other institutions in Spain, Europe, and Latin America. Among other distinctions, he holds the International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and has received the Fuera de Serie , the Architectural Digest and the Icon awards. He has also received the Medal of Arts from the city of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and was named Architect of the World by the Chamber of Architects of Lima. He has also a nomination for the U.S. Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Medal, and for the United States Artists Prize 2020. His active research topics are diverse: Emergent Practices in Architecture explores the need to redesign the figure of the architect and their project techniques by revisiting the traditional working systems in order to achieve greater harmony with the social, technological, and cultural moment that we live in. Typological Corrections reviews the obsolescence of the architectonic type(s) and advocates for the recycling of buildings for the new programmatic and environmental challenges that we are faced with at this present moment in time. Finally, Rural City works on the experimental opportunities offered to architecture through the use of the new geographies resulting from the unbalanced exodus to cities and not through the few equations that govern the functioning of the planet. One of his latest books, published by the University of San Sebastián in Santiago de Chile, revisits his lecture The project of the practice , in which he argues that the establishment of a professional practice is a project in itself that every architect must consciously undertake. Some of his proposals have put even the most ingrained rituals of the discipline into crisis territory. Among them, we can highlight: the opening of a dialogue with other agents and allowing for their knowledge to have an impact on a design, even if it means the consequent loss of control of the architect; the value of the prototype as an element that is drawn and manufactured in real-time with the intervention of the knowledge and means of third parties that are different from the architectural office; the interest in developing fragments from complex projects for which several offices coexist; the growing importance of the architect as a mediator and communicator with social and political responsibilities, etc.

Sus temas activos de Investigación son diversos: Prácticas Emergentes en Arquitectura explora la necesidad de rediseñar la figura del arquitecto y sus técnicas proyectuales poniendo en crisis los sistemas tradicionales de trabajo para lograr una mayor sintonía con el momento social, tecnológico y cultural que habitamos. Correcciones Tipológicas revisa la obsolescencia de los tipos arquitectónicos proponiendo el reciclaje de los edificios para los nuevos retos programáticos y medioambientales que atraviesan el presente. Por último, Rural City trabaja sobre las oportunidades experimentales ofrecidas a la arquitectura por las nuevas geografías resultantes del éxodo a las ciudades que está desequilibrando no pocas ecuaciones que rigen el funcionamiento del planeta. Uno de sus últimos libros editado por la Universidad de San Sebastián de Santiago de Chile, recoge su conferencia El proyecto de la práctica en la que defiende que el establecimiento de la práctica profesional es un proyecto en sí mismo que todo arquitecto debe acometer conscientemente. Algunas de sus propuestas ponen en crisis los rituales más arraigados de la disciplina. Entre ellas destacamos: la apertura del proyecto al diálogo con otros agentes permitiendo que sus conocimientos afecten al diseño con la consiguiente pérdida de poder del arquitecto; la puesta en valor del prototipo que se dibuja y fabrica en tiempo real a través del conocimiento y los medios de otros entornos que no son los del estudio de arquitectura; el interés de desarrollar fragmentos de proyectos complejos en los que conviven varios despachos; la creciente importancia del arquitecto como mediador y comunicador con responsabilidades sociales y políticas, etc.
