[EN] Satisfying the oxidizing species requirements that occur in activated sludge systems is essential so that, both the oxidation processes of organic matter and the nitrification and denitrification of the medium can take place in appropriate conditions. Through this research, different oxygen and nitrate control strategies have been designed, allowing the system to follow changes in the set point and to reject disturbances associated with the flow influent of the waste water treatment plant. A model already implemented in MATLAB/Simulink has been used as starting point. This system has been improved by including an oxygen transfer model proposed through the revision of the most relevant literature and the necessary calculations. Additionally, the reaction system has been setting according to the configuration proposed by the Benchmark Simulation Model Nº1 (BSM-1), enabling the nitrification-denitrification conditions and leading to the validations of the simulation¿s results around a set point operation. Subsequently, the simulation of variations with respect to the steady state allowed the identification of the system dynamics by using a genetic algorithm. Finally, the characteristic parameters of the controllers have been tuned for various strategies, identifying the most suitable PID-based control architecture for disturbances in this type of systems.
