[EN] In this Master's tesis, a study is developed focusing on a painting on canvas with the representation of the portrait of Canon Mariano Liñan y Morelló (Valencia, 1769-1844). The artwork, about which there was a profound lack of knowledge, had once been attributed to the same production of Vicente López (Valencia, 1772-Madrid, 1850), since he reproduced with masterly skill the autograph portrait currently preserved in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid and which is documented in 1835. In this case, the portrayed appears with priestly vestments typical of the one who was rector of the parish where artwork is preserved and he is holding the Knight¿s Cross of the Order of Carlos III as one of his greatest decorations. The purpose of this study has been to expertize the painting with a view to trying to clarify its authorship, which was finally discovered during the cleaning process with the autograph appearance of its author: Miquel Pou; an outstanding follower of the style of the court painter of Fernando VII.
The figure of Liñán is of major importance to understand certain aspects of the religious, political and social life of the Valencia of his time and, in particular, as the representee who, through his will, commissioned the arrival of drinking water to the city of Valencia. Apart from the historiographical questions and the stylistic study of the artwork, an analysis of the constitutive materials of the painting has been completed. These parameters were determined by means of different survey systems in order to establish a diagnosis that would allow a precise knowledge of the painting in its state of conservation, including a study of the framing, which is contemporary to the artwork, and of remarkable documentary interest to the inscription that appears on the lower margin, as well as for the quality of its manufacture.
The artwork is in a relatively good state of preservation, although three of its main deficiencies could be defined from the outset: the appearance in some areas of early shrinkage cracks in the pictorial film as a result of a technical defect, the destabilization of the flatness of the textile support as a consequence of the imbalance of the perimeter tensioning, as well as the sedimentation of dirt and oxidation of varnishes.
The work has been intervened as part of the integral rehabilitation program of the Sacristy of the Parish of San Nicolás and Pedro Mártir de Verona, formed by the team of restorers of the IRP through the company interships of the UPV.
