Patrimonio negativo: revisión de un concepto complejo

Abstract

[ES] El presente trabajo final de máster se ha centrado en el estudio del concepto de patrimonio negativo (negative heritage en inglés). Para ello, se ha realizado una revisión bibliográfica de las publicaciones más relevantes escritas al respecto para comprender este concepto, cómo afecta al propio concepto de patrimonio cultural y cómo se podría actuar en cuanto a su conservación y restauración.

Con patrimonio negativo se hace alusión a aquellos bienes culturales que están asociados a acontecimientos considerados como negativos en la historia de un país (por ejemplo, los campos de concentración nazi) o que son rechazados por una parte significativa de la sociedad (por ejemplo, las esculturas confederadas en Estados Unidos). Ante esta situación, una de las alternativas que se suele proponer es la resignificación de dichos bienes, alterando el significado inicial con que fueron construidos y adecuándolos a las necesidades de la sociedad en el momento presente. La conservación y restauración de estos bienes puede resultar también problemática, ya que en ocasiones existen propuestas para su destrucción.

En primer lugar, se exponen las diferentes definiciones de patrimonio cultural y, en especial, de patrimonio negativo. También se presentan las diferentes dimensiones del patrimonio negativo y se analizan algunos ejemplos significativos. Por último, se sugieren futuras líneas de investigación que permitirían profundizar en este complejo tema.

[EN] This final master¿s project has focused on the study of the concept of negative heritage. To do this, a bibliographical review of the most relevant publications written in this regard has been carried out to understand this concept, how it affects the very concept of cultural heritage and what kind of action could be taken regarding its conservation and restoration.

Negative heritage refers to those cultural assets that are associated with events considered negative in the history of a country (for example, the Nazi concentration camps) or that are rejected by a significant part of society (for example, the Confederate sculptures in the United States). Faced with this situation, one of the alternatives that is usually proposed is the resignification of those assets, altering the initial meaning with which they were built and adapting them to the needs of society at the present time. The conservation and restoration of these assets can also be problematic, since sometimes it is proposed to destroy them.

In the first place, the different definitions of cultural heritage and, especially, of negative heritage are exposed. The different dimensions of negative heritage are also presented and some significant examplesare analyzed. Finally, future lines of research are suggested, which would allow us to delve into this complex topic.
