[EN] This Final Degree Project (FDP) is carried out during the internship period in a paint
manufacturing company, which is located in the province of Valencia.
In the manufacturing process of cationic paste, a very important parameter that must be
controlled for the customer is viscosity. To start the grinding process, viscosity specifications
defined at 25 °C must be met. For this, it is necessary to take a sample from a tank called
"header tank" (prior to grinding), which does not have an exchanger jacket, and take it to a
thermostated bath until reaching 25 °C in a stable way to be able to subsequently measure
the Brookfield viscosity of pasta in the laboratory.
To solve this problem of time in the process, the following improvement is proposed that
follows the Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, widely used in the improvement of processes
at an industrial level. To this end, the installation of in-line viscosity meters in the "Premix"
mixing tanks is proposed, which could directly provide data on this parameter without the
need to extract the sample. In addition, the "Premix" tank (prior to the "header tank") has an
exchanger jacket, so the in-line viscosity measurement could be carried out following the
specification set at 25 °C. As from the "Premix" tank to the "header tank" there is simply a
transfer from one to another, the properties of cationic paste are not altered, so the behavior
of the viscosity of the paste is the same in one place or another.
The present work will consist of carrying out tests by means of a small-scale assembly
simulating the turbulence of the agitation that occurs in the "Premix" tank at different
temperatures to verify that in-line viscosity measuring equipment is reliable by comparing
with the laboratory equipment, which has a calibrated and verified equipment, the Brookfield
viscometer. Subsequently, the viscometer shall be introduced into a final product tank (which
goes after grinding) and measurements of the inside of the tank shall be taken using the inline viscometer and others by taking samples and analysing them in the laboratory, in order
to know if they measure the same thing to verify that the equipment measures correctly.
Finally, the installation of in-line viscometers in the "Premix" tanks will be proposed, which
will allow the automation of the process through connection with a SCADA system, taking into
account the possible alterations that may occur to the measures of the equipment the
dispersion agitation, the budget of making these modifications to the “Premix” tanks and what
improvement of time and added value it will give to the final product.
