San Michele Cemetery in Venice, Italy

Abstract

[EN] Established in 1807 as Venice s principal cemetery, and enlarged in 1839 when two islands were joined together, San Michele has been under continuous development for over 200 years, but its romantic exterior contrasts sharply with the sometimes rather municipal character of its interior. Following an international competition, the development and extension of the north-east side of the cemetery began. The proposal was developed in two main phases and realised over an extended period, with the first phase of construction beginning in 2004 and the second phase being completed in 2017. A further phase currently remains in planning, along with a proposal to create a connected cemetery island to the east.

[ES] Establecido en 1807 como el principal cementerio de Venecia y ampliado en 1839 cuando se unieron las dos islas, San Michele ha estado en continuo desarrollo durante más de 200 años. Sin embrago, su exterior romántico contrasta fuertemente con el carácter municipal de su interior. Tras un concurso internacional, se inició el desarrollo y ampliación del lado noreste del cementerio. La propuesta se desarrolló en dos fases principales y se llevó a cabo durante un período extenso: la primera fase de construcción comenzó en 2004 y la segunda fase finalizó en 2017. Una fase adicional permanece actualmente en planificación, junto con una propuesta para crear un cementerio conectado al este.
