Con la calle en los cielos. Aproximación crítica a los modelos de calle corredor elevadas

Abstract

[ES] A raíz de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se originan nuevas necesidades de vivienda, esto unido al avance de la industria automovilística genera una serie de inconvenientes en cuanto a la gestión de la vía pública, puesto que esta fue invadida. Impulsados por esta idea surgen numerosas propuestas tipológicas en las que se eleva literalmente la calle para convertirla en corredores de acceso a las viviendas. Muchos fueron los arquitectos que se atrevieron a experimentar con esta idea, pero fueron Alison y Peter Smithson los que acuñaron bajo el nombre de Streets in the sky el movimiento. La pareja dedicó gran parte de su carrera a promover y defender los ideales que muchos otros arquitectos apoyaron. Pese a todo el esfuerzo y los recursos que se invirtieron en tratar de evolucionar el concepto, los resultados no fueron los esperados, pues la mayor parte los casos fueron un fracaso debido a que los usuarios no estaban preparados para todos los avances tecnológicos e ideológicos que los arquitectos pensaron para ellos.

[EN] As a result of the Second World War, new housing needs arose, and this, together with the advance of the automobile industry, generated a series of problems with regard to the management of the public thoroughfare, as it was invaded. Driven by this idea, numerous typological proposals arose in which the street was literally raised to convert it into access corridors to the dwellings. Many architects dared to experiment with this idea, but it was Alison and Peter Smithson who coined the movement under the name Streets in the sky. The couple devoted much of their career to promoting and defending the ideals that many other architects supported. Despite all the effort and resources that were invested in trying to evolve the concept, the results were not as expected, as in most cases they were a failure due to the fact that the users were not prepared for all the technological and ideological advances that the architects thought of for them.
