The viability of blockchains

Abstract

[ES] Las blockchains son una tecnología bastante reciente que ha llegado a ser conocida mundialmente durante estos últimos años, especialmente por su relación con las criptomonedas. Entender cómo funcionan, sus ventajas, desventajas, puntos fuertes y debilidades es muy importante para poder determinar si la tecnología podrá llegar a los horizontes a los que apunta o si se quedará como está en la actualidad. El propósito de esta tesis es aclarar esta pregunta a través de aprender sobre la tecnología desde dentro: Cómo funciona, su historia, sus aplicaciones actuales así como de qué forma empezar a programarlas para poder proceder a discutir sobre los factores que las están deteniendo de avanzar más y si seguirán así en el futuro próximo.

[EN] Blockchain is a fairly new technology that has been brought up to the spotlight these past few years, especially because of their relation to cryptocurrencies. Understanding how the technology works, advantages, disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses is very important to grasp in order to ultimately determine if the technology will indeed work for all the purposes that have been proposed until now or if the buzz around it is just that and the technology has no future in the field. This thesis' purpose is to provide this information by diving into the technology's core and learning about how it functions as well as its history, its current applications and how to start programming them to completely understand it and then start the discussion of their future.
