[EN] Decarbonization of ports is an important topic to address in order to ensure sustainability and
environmental care. The use of fossil fuels associated with port operations and activities is a
cause of air and water pollution. Decarbonization involves reducing harmful emissions in pursuit
of an energy and ecological transition that combats climate change. To achieve this, it relies on
renewable energy, electrification of vehicles and machinery, efficient infrastructure, and ecofriendly practices.
The literature mentioned provides examples of actions and research being carried out within the
port sector with the objective of making port operations as eco-friendly as possible. Given the
complexity of this sector, improvement proposals have a wide range of applications, from
mitigating emissions during ship berthing to optimizing container movements within the
terminal.
To conduct this study, various data from previous works on the operations of the ports of
Valencia and Trieste have been analyzed with the aim of creating an adaptable improvement
model for other ports. Through the study of these data, it has been concluded that there are
various aspects that can be improved, which could lead to a satisfactory change in terms of
emissions and costs. Once the ideas were formulated, the necessary calculations were
performed to assess their viability. To achieve this, it has been necessary to formulate equations
that yield useful results, research among possible options to choose those that will have the
greatest impact and define conversion factors for energy generation and emissions of the
proposed fuels.
Through this process, we apply the literature to a practical case, namely the ports of Trieste and
Valencia, to determine whether these measures are suitable for ports with different
characteristics.
The main results you will find include savings in terms of costs, emissions, and energy
consumption that would result from implementing the measures explained in the study.
Additionally, there is a brief analysis describing how the ports currently operate and highlighting
areas in which improvements should be made. Finally, there is a comparation between the two
ports under study.
