How are Iraqi refugees depicted in media discourse headlines? A critical discourse analysis of The Guardian and German Deutsche Welle

Abstract

[ES] [EN] Nuestro objetivo en este artículo es estudiar cómo se representa a los refugiados iraquíes en Deutsche Welle y The Guardian para ver cómo aparecen en los titulares. Además, pretendemos ver si existen diferencias en cuanto a ideologías, reportajes y cómo se les representa en los medios. Para preparar el corpus, recopilamos los titulares sobre iraquíes publicados en las ediciones digitales y los archivos de TG y DW. Se seleccionaron los dos periódicos porque sus ideologías son diferentes. Ideológicamente, TG se considera de centro-izquierda, mientras que DW se considera conservador. En general, los dos periódicos muestran algunas diferencias culturales en cuanto a las publicaciones, como normas, creencias e idiomas.Los datos para este artículo consisten en titulares de noticias sobre la crisis de los refugiados iraquíes, que tuvo lugar en junio de 2014 y continuó hasta 2017. Los titulares seleccionados para el análisis coinciden con los años del estallido de la crisis de los refugiados en Europa.

[EN] Our aim in this article is to study how Iraqi refugees are depicted in Deutsche Welle and The Guardian as a way of seeing how they are portrayed in headlines. Also, we intend to see if there are differences concerning ideologies, reporting, and how they are represented in the media. To prepare the corpus, we collected the headlines on Iraqis published in digital editions and the archives of TG and DW. The two newspapers were selected because their ideologies are different. Ideologically, TG is regarded as central-left wing, whereas DW is viewed as conservative. Generally, the two newspapers show some cultural differences as regards the publications, such as norms, beliefs, and languages.The data for this article consists of news headlines on the Iraqi refugee crisis, which took place in June 2014 and continued until 2017. The headlines selected for the analysis coincide with the years of the outbreak of the refugee crisis in Europe.
