Identity and use of a pluricentric language in conflict: Catalan in Spain

Abstract

[ES] La mayoría de los hablantes de lengua catalana residen en España y, por lo tanto, suelen tener que elegir entre el catalán y el castellano para comunicarse. Los estudios que abordan los factores que influyen en esta elección arrojan resultados diferentes en función de los tres territorios principales: Cataluña, el País Valenciano y las Islas Baleares. Esta diversidad se debe, principalmente, a la diferente intensidad -e incluso diferente sentido- en cuanto a las políticas lingüísticas y la planificación del uso de las lenguas. Por otra parte, el carácter pluricéntrico de esta lengua también refleja diferencias en cuanto a la planificación del corpus. El factor de la identidad social se entrelaza con ambas dimensiones, la del estatus y la del corpus, y al mismo tiempo muestra una relevancia relativa con respecto a otros factores. Esa relevancia puede ser diversa, dependiendo de los territorios y del contexto histórico, actualmente influido por la crisis en las relaciones entre el Estado español y Cataluña.

[EN] Most speakers of the Catalan language are based in Spain and, therefore, they usually have to make a choice between Catalan anad Spanish to get involved in communication. The studies dealing with the factors influencing this choice yield different results depending on the three main territories; Catalonia, the Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands. This diversity is due, primarily, to different intensity - and even different sense - in terms of language policies and language use planning. On the other hand, the pluricentric character of this language also reflects differences regarding corpus planning. The social identity factor is interwined with both dimnsions, the status and the corpus, and at the same time shows a relative relevance as regard other factors. That relevance may be diverse, depending on the territories and the historic context, currently influenced by the crisis in the relations between the Spanish State and Catalonia.
