La reutilización del patrimonio industrial. El caso de Port de Sagunt

Abstract

[ES] El emplazamiento marítimo de Puerto de Sagunto ha facilitado que, desde los primeros asentamientos íberos y romanos, haya tenido una destacable actividad comercial.

A principios del Siglo XX, el empresario vasco Ramon de la Sota, reconociendo el potencial de la zona por su ubicación y por la cercanía de las minas de hierro de Ojos Negros, inició unas inversiones que acabarían creando una de las siderurgias más importantes de Europa.

En la década de 1980, con la integración en la CEE, la modernización de la industria española exigió el cierre y desmantelamiento de la siderurgia de Puerto de Sagunto. A pesar de la lucha obrera, la factoría se cerró en 1984. Desde entonces, Puerto de Sagunto navega entre la reindustrialización y la reutilización del patrimonio industrial.

Actualmente, con diversos proyectos de reutilización ejecutados o previstos, es posible estudiarlos y extraer conclusiones sobre su adecuación desde el punto de vista funcional y patrimonial. La metodología será el análisis de estos proyectos centrado, por una parte, en su contenido y cómo se han ejecutado; por otra, en el grado de adecuación de los nuevos usos a los edificios en cuanto a funcionalidad, mantenimiento y sostenibilidad. Para ello, analizaremos algunos casos concretos: los proyectos realizados del alto horno nº2 (musealizado), la nave de talleres (espacio teatral), el casino (edificio sociocultural), las oficinas (oficinas) y el que se está redactando para el economato.

En conclusión, propongo analizar desde una visión crítica la reutilización del patrimonio industrial, centrándome tanto en obras realizadas como pendientes de ejecución, en Puerto de Sagunto con el fin de obtener conclusiones generales de cara a próximas intervenciones. El objetivo es definir criterios para que la conservación y reutilización del patrimonio industrial, siendo sostenibles tanto desde el punto de vista funcional como cultural, permitan transmitir ese valioso legado a las generaciones futuras.

[EN] The maritime location of Puerto de Sagunto has facilitated that, since the first Iberian and Roman settlements, it was connected to a remarkable commercial activity.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Basque businessman Ramon de la Sota, recognizing the potential of the area due to its location and the proximity of the Ojos Negros iron mines. This initiated investments that would end up creating one of the most important iron and steel companies in Europe. In the 1980s, with the integration into the EEC (European. Economic Community), the modernization of Spanish industry required the closure and dismantling of the Puerto de Sagunto steelworks. Despite the workers' struggle, the factory was closed in 1984. Since then, Puerto de Sagunto has been navigating between reindustrialization and reuse of the industrial heritage.

Currently, with several reuse projects implemented or planned, it is possible to study them and draw conclusions about their suitability from a functional and heritage point of view. The methodology will be the analysis of these projects focused, on the one hand, on their content and how they have been executed; on the other hand, on the degree of adaptation of the new uses to the buildings in terms of functionality, maintenance and sustainability. To this end, we will analyze some specific cases: the projects carried out for the blast furnace nº2 (musealized), the workshop building (theater space) or the casino (sociocultural building) and the one being drafted for the commissary.

In conclusion, it is proposed to analyze from a critical point of view the reuse of industrial heritage, focusing on both completed and pending works, in Puerto de Sagunto in order to obtain general conclusions for future interventions. The aim is to define criteria for the conservation and reuse of industrial heritage, being sustainable both from a functional and cultural point of view, to transmit this valuable legacy to future generations.
