Casto Fernández-Shaw e Iturralde (1896-1978) y la aventura del dibujo fantástico

Abstract

[EN] The drawings of Casto Fernández-Shaw (C.F.S.) show an overflowing imagination. Perhaps this description, so often used to define C.F.S. by those who knew him, led him to navigate a world where his utopia was transformed into a swarm of multiple and strange drawings, with the desire of conquering the ideal city projected from a technological and implausible mind. C.F.S. intended to demonstrate with his inventions that this fantastic city could exist at the service of the people, in a most convulsive and unpredictable century. C.F.S. was an architect capable of drawing stories with an extreme imagination, from a comic strip to an unbuilt architectural project, and from the most fanciful and surreal to the most rational, modern and unique of the buildings built during the twentieth century in our country and abroad. C.F.S.'s drawings seem to be born with agility, with extreme speed in the face of the social, urban and architectural changes that were approaching cities, responding to technological, avant-garde and cultural needs. Faced with these needs to generate cities with futuristic connotations, C.F.S. played an important role in the conquest of unique drawn inventions that present him as a multifaceted architect with artistic concerns, but with the desire to create scenarios for an extraordinarily diffuse world. We find a large amount of documentation on C.F.S., from a biography documented by the architect himself and expanded by prominent authors, architects and his own collaborators, to extensive publications of his work illustrated in articles, books, exhibitions, etc.; the collection of drawings, photographs and all kinds of representations never ceases to amaze, capturing the attention by the unrealized projects. Possibly, C.F.S. is an architect who considered himself an engineer and vice versa, at the same time as a fantasist and inventor. From among these terms, C.F.S. chose for himself that of inventor, an architect more contemporary than traditional, without losing sight of social and public priorities through his projects for housing. In the face of so many documents produced, we will limit ourselves in this review of the life of C.F.S. to the graphic categories from which his idea of the future flows and his way of graphically representing the set of his thoughts in the adventure of fantastic drawing.

[ES] Los dibujos de Casto Fernández-Shaw (C.F.S.) muestran una imaginación desbordante. Tal vez este calificativo, tantas veces aplicado a C.F.S. por los que le conocieron, le llevó a recorrer un mundo en el que su utopía se transformó en un enjambre de múltiples y extraños dibujos, con el afán de conquistar la ciudad ideal proyectada desde lo tecnológico y lo inverosímil. C.F.S pretendía demostrar con sus invenciones que podía existir esa ciudad fantástica al servicio de las personas, en un siglo de lo más convulso e imprevisible. C.F.S. fue un arquitecto capaz de dibujar historias con una imaginación desmedida, preparado para crear desde una historieta hasta un proyecto arquitectónico jamás construido, y desde lo más fantasioso y surrealista hasta lo más racional, moderno y singular de las edificaciones realizadas durante el siglo XX en nuestro país y fuera de él. Los dibujos de C.F.S. parecen nacer con agilidad, de una rapidez extrema ante los cambios sociales, urbanísticos y arquitectónicos que se aproximaban a las ciudades, respondiendo a las necesidades tecnológicas, vanguardistas y culturales. Ante esta necesidad de generar ciudades con connotaciones futuristas, C.F.S. desempeñó un papel importante en la conquista de singulares invenciones dibujadas que le presentan como un arquitecto multifacético con inquietudes artísticas, pero con el afán de crear escenarios para un mundo extraordinariamente difuso. Encontramos una gran cantidad de documentación sobre C.F.S., desde una biografía documentada por el propio arquitecto y ampliada por destacados autores, arquitectos y sus propios colaboradores, hasta amplias publicaciones de su obra ilustradas en artículos, libros, exposiciones, etc.; no deja de sorprender la colección de dibujos, fotografías y todo tipo de representaciones captando especialmente la atención los proyectos no realizados. Probablemente, C.F.S. sea un arquitecto que se consideraba ingeniero y viceversa, a la vez que fantasioso e inventor. De entre estos calificativos, C.F.S. elegía el de inventor, un arquitecto más contemporáneo que tradicional, sin perder de vista las prioridades sociales y públicas a través de sus proyectos realizados para viviendas. Ante tantos documentos elaborados, nos ceñiremos en este repaso a la vida de C.F.S. en el dibujo y las categorías gráficas desde las que mana su particular idea del futuro y su manera de representar gráficamente el conjunto de sus pensamientos en la aventura del dibujo fantástico.
