Resumen

[EN] The contribution offered focuses on a topic that has so far been little systematically investigated by historiography, but is equally stimulating for the complexity of the theme and the wealth of evidence that characterizes it: tower houses. It is a passive defense system conceived by feudal lords to defend their possessions, both from attacks coming from the sea and from internal ones. The construction of these factories, begun in the second half of the 16th century, integrated that of the coastal towers built from the 1630s onwards at the behest of the vice-kings of Naples (affecting the entire territory of the Kingdom, from the Tyrrhenian coast to the Adriatic coast). Much of the northern territory of the Kingdom of Naples was affected - the area investigated in this contribution - of which there are testimonies in the current province of Caserta: in the Garigliano Valley and in that of the Volturno, in the territories of Sessa Aurunca, Cellole, Mondragone, to push into the Aversa countryside up to Naples and even beyond, in Cilento. The typological and constructive aspects of these buildings are interesting, and closely recall the contemporary factories of the Papal State.Currently, many of them are privately owned and have lost the identifying features that characterized them, with the risk that important testimonies of a constructive practice that was in continuity with the central power may be lost. The research, investigating these architectures, aims to bring out the methodological process that favored their construction, the constructive and typological features that characterize them, to reach the conservation problems and advance proposals for the protection and enhancement of the cultural landscape that these determine.
