Forum Novum at Mile X of Via Traiana (Italy)

[EN] The project we are presenting starts from the strong point represented by the Via Appia, registered in the UNESCO WHL. The construction of the via Appia network was started in 321 BC and completed in 109 AD, when Emperor Trajan built via Traiana from Benevento to Brindisi. At mile X of the Via Traiana stood the town of Forum Novum, a place of historical stratification, that profoundly influenced the surrounding territory, giving rise to the medieval settlement system and determining the layout of the landscape. It represents the lighthouse area from which to restart and around which to plan and structure regeneration engine interventions. The strategy of the project starts from the territorial potential, where the pivotal element from which the whole project unravels is the Forum Novum site; the whole project is based on the potential of the territory and the Forum Novum site is where it unravels. The strategic vision of the territorial regeneration program constitutes an integration between the UNESCO site “Via Appia. Regina Viarum” and interventions on historic centers, to improve infrastructures and upgrade old public buildings, which will become a central part of the ‘Borghi’ project, hosting its activities. The idea is to make permanent the workshop activities on topography, study and reconstruction of the landscape and archaeological research, with Universities and Schools, making this territory an incubator of spin-offs on “cultural heritage supply chain.” Our aim is to generate opportunities, triggering a virtuous circle supported by public and private stakeholders. It will involve the Municipalities with a view to the rediscovery, conservation, enhancement and promotion of the pedagogy of the territory and its cultural, landscape and environmental values. Scientific research fits into local communities in an integrated way, triggering the need for tourist residentiality and the birth of businesses in the sector of culture.

[ES] El proyecto que presentamos parte del punto fuerte que representa la Vía Apia, inscrita en la Lista de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. La construcción de la red de la Vía Apia se inició en el 321 a.C. y se completó en el 109 d.C., cuando el emperador Trajano construyó la Vía Trajana desde Benevento hasta Brindisi. En el miliario X de la Vía Trajana se encontraba la ciudad de Forum Novum, un lugar de estratificación histórica que influyó profundamente en el territorio circundante, dando origen al sistema de asentamientos medievales y determinando la configuración del paisaje. Representa el área faro desde la que volver a partir y en torno a la cual planificar y estructurar intervenciones que actúen como motor de regeneración. La estrategia del proyecto parte de las potencialidades territoriales, donde el elemento clave del que se despliega todo el proyecto es el yacimiento de Forum Novum; todo el proyecto se basa en el potencial del territorio y tiene en Forum Novum su punto de articulación. La visión estratégica del programa de regeneración territorial consiste en una integración entre el sitio UNESCO “Via Appia. Regina Viarum” y las intervenciones en los centros históricos, para mejorar las infraestructuras y rehabilitar antiguos edificios públicos, que pasarán a ser una parte central del proyecto de los Borghi, acogiendo sus actividades. La idea es dar carácter permanente a las actividades de taller sobre topografía, estudio y reconstrucción del paisaje e investigación arqueológica, junto con universidades y escuelas, convirtiendo este territorio en un incubador de spin-offs vinculados a la “cadena de valor del patrimonio cultural”. Nuestro objetivo es generar oportunidades, activando un círculo virtuoso apoyado por actores públicos y privados. Esto implicará a los municipios en una perspectiva de redescubrimiento, conservación, puesta en valor y difusión de la pedagogía del territorio y de sus valores culturales, paisajísticos y ambientales. La investigación científica se inserta en las comunidades locales de forma integrada, generando la necesidad de residencias turísticas y el nacimiento de empresas en el sector de la cultura.
