Vittorio Filippini and the 1950 stage design project for the Arena di Verona

[EN] The text presents and analyzes Vittorio Filippini's scenographic project for the Arena di Verona duringthe 1950 opera season. At that time, and for several years prior, different scenographic approaches wereapplied in the Arena. On one hand, the operatic performance was adapted to the unique characteristics ofthe amphitheatre; but frequently came into conflict with one another when they had to coexist on the Arenastage within the same season. The solution adopted by Filippini resolves both issues. The study examines theformal articulation and the architectural devices of the innovative set design system introduced by the Veronesearchitect, through which he succeeded in reconciling the requirements of operatic spectacle with the spatialcharacteristics of the monument, while at the same time reworking and surpassing the proposals put forwardby his colleagues of the period.

[ES] El texto presenta y analiza el proyecto escenográfico de Vittorio Filippini para la Arena de Verona enla temporada lírica de 1950. En ese momento, y desde hacía varios años, se alternaban en la Arena distintasconcepciones escénicas que, por un lado, tendían a primar la adecuación de la representación operística a lasespeciales características del anfiteatro y, por otro, entraban en conflicto entre ellas cuando debían coexistiren el escenario areniano dentro de una misma temporada. La solución adoptada por Filippini resuelve ambascuestiones. Se indaga en la articulación formal y en los dispositivos arquitectónicos del novedoso sistemaescenográfico adoptado por el arquitecto veronés que con su propuesta logra conciliar las necesidades delespectáculo operístico con las características espaciales del monumento, reelaborando y superando al mismotiempo las propuestas de los colegas de la época.
