dc.description.abstract | [EN] "Smart grid" is a generic term to describe a proposed electronic grid transformation with the intention of relying on the greater technological advances available today. This transformation will be from a centralized, producer-controlled network to one that is decentralized with more consumer interaction. Through the use of the Internet, wireless sensors, software, and computing, smart grids will allow distributors of electricity to better manage its outputs to increase consumer efficiency [1]. The most important component of the smart grid technology is "Advanced Metering Infrastructure" (AMI) which allows manually read meters to become automated through the use of the internet. AMI also incorporates a concept called "Prices to Devices" which allows for near real time costs of electricity to be identified which then signals the major energy-user appliances in the home. This information is processed and enables the consumer to see what price they are paying for energy before they buy it. This will help to motivate the users to reduce energy use and cost. This Smart Grid looks for efficiency performance and many studies have been done about it. According to the United States Department of Energy, if the grid were simply 5% more efficient, the energy savings would equate to eliminating the fuel and greenhouse gas emissions of 53 million cars. | es_ES |
