Evolución de la Red de Transmisión de Acceso Móvil desde TDM a ALL-IP

Abstract

El estándar de telefonía móvil 2G GSM se desarrolló teniendo en cuenta tecnologías ya existentes y bien conocidas en ese momento: al ser un estándar pensado principalmente para telefonía vocal, GSM heredó de las redes fijas las técnicas de transporte digitales TDM (PDH y SDH) para el despliegue de la red de acceso. Más adelante, cuando se desarrollaron los estándares 3G no se tuvo en cuenta lo existente, por lo que a medio plazo resultó que la red TDM ya desplegada no era capaz o no era la adecuada para soportar las capacidades y servicios de datos que 3G podía ofrecer. Por este motivo las operadoras tomaron la decisión de migrar/evolucionar sus redes TDM hacia tecnologías basadas en IP, por encontrarse éstas muy extendidas en redes fijas como Internet, por estar pensadas para transportar todo tipo de tráfico y además por resultar más rentables que TDM. Este proyecto comienza por una breve introducción histórica a las comunicaciones móviles, describiendo después los aspectos generales del estándar GSM así como el despliegue de la primera red TDM que le dio soporte: tecnologías, topologías, elementos y equipos. Posteriormente se describen los cambios ocurridos en el mercado que llevaron a la decisión de evolucionar a IP, para entonces pasar a pormenorizar y analizar los procedimientos, estrategias, tecnologías y algunos equipos elegidos para llevar a cabo este proceso gradual de evolución de la red de transmisión de acceso móvil a All-IP, con el objetivo de conformar una guía sobre el mismo.

The 2G standard for mobile telephony called GSM was developed taking into consideration the existing and well-known technologies at the moment: GSM was a standard mainly thought for voice communications so it inherited from fixed networks the digital transport technologies such as TDM (PDH and SDH) for the deployment of its access network. Afterwards, 3G standards were developed without considering the existing TDM network so, in a medium term, it turned out not to be capable and appropriate for handling the capacities and services that 3G could provide. This is the reason why mobile network operators decided to migrate/evolve their TDM network towards IP-based technologies, for these being widely extended among fixed networks such as the Internet, for being prepared to carry all types of traffic and for being more cost-effective than TDM. This project starts with a brief introduction to the history of mobile communications, describing then the general aspects of the GSM standard as well as the deployment of the first TDM network that supported it: technologies, topologies, elements and equipment. Afterwards, this project explains the changes on the market which led to the decision of evolving towards IP, and next it details and analyses the procedures, strategies, technologies and some of the equipment chosen on the gradual process of network evolution towards All-IP, with the objective of making up a guideline on it.
