Arquitecturas olvidadas: las expediciones científicas como método de investigación del patrimonio en peligro

Abstract

La arquitectura de los mayas antiguos constituye la manifestación más característica de esta milenaria cultura centroamericana. Muchas de sus ciudades permanecen aún olvidadas, quedando sus edificaciones expuestas a los peligros derivados del abandono y del expolio. El grupo de investigación Patrimonio Cultural y Cooperación para el Desarrollo del IRP/UPV planificó y llevó a cabo en 2009 y 2010 dos expediciones científicas con el objetivo de obtener información sobre este patrimonio sepultado bajo la selva tropical. Estas acciones, cuyo fin es el estudio y análisis de la arquitectura, permiten desplazar hasta regiones inaccesibles de Petén a un equipo de investigadores cualificados, provistos del material técnico necesario para la documentación gráfica de su arquitectura mediante diversas técnicas de levantamiento arquitectónico y fotográfico.

The architecture of the ancient Mayas constitutes the most characteristic expression of this age-old central American culture. Many of their cities still lie forgotten, their buildings exposed to the dangers stemming from neglect and plunder. In 2009 and 2010 the Patrimonio Cultural y Cooperación para el Desarrollo research group of the IRP/UPV planned and carried out two scientific expeditions with the aim of obtaining information on this heritage, buried under the tropical jungle. These measures were carried out with the aim of studying and analysing the architecture, and enable us to send a team of qualified researchers to inaccessible regions of Petén, supplied with the technical material necessary for graphic documentation of the architecture by means of different techniques of architectural and photographic surveying.
