[EN] KM has become one of the most important factors for a company to achieve a competitive advantage. KMS are developed to enable the application of KM concepts in a dynamic and effective manner. In spite of its relevance nowadays, the process of designing and developing KMS is not broadly studied and people facing this task lack complete information required to succeed. In addition, there still exists the idea of these systems as very expensive, complex, and specialised for large companies. Nevertheless, there is a large range of solutions, approaches, tools and techniques that enable its application to any kind of company working within any industry. The aim of this research is to provide a clear understanding of the KMS characteristics and the existing approaches, methodologies, tools, and techniques for its design and development. Different commercial solutions are presented and a case study with a complete design shown. This research seeks to provide practical help to apply in the design and development of KMS. The sponsor of the project presented in the case study is a small company with a strong growth within a dynamic and highly competitive environment. Thus, they needed a KMS to help them to give a faster response to their clients through a better manage of the knowledge stored in their repositories.
