[EN] Water supply and distribution systems constitute a fundamental part of the infrastructure of the urban areas in the developed countries. Public water department or private companies ensure water for domestic application.
However, most of the developing countries and many rural areas around the world still do not have suitable infrastructures to provide proper water delivery.
This scenario and the importance of groundwater within world water resources generate a promising situation for the water pump industry, especially, when submersible pumps are considered.
Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to design a portable submersible pump unit for domestic water supply, defining a market niche positioning for a specific use, in order to achieve a perfect integration in the global market.
The scope of this thesis includes the setting of the pump general characteristics: type, flow and pressure, the design implications as well as the hydraulic dynamics and the component design, which finally led to the rotating parts definition, calculation and dimensioning.
The engineering work has been done in two ways. The first proposal involves the usage of the traditional ¿manual¿ design system via numerical calculation and a point by point profile designing while the second one entails using one of the available software programs to complete the same objective. As a conclusion, the comparison of both methods mentioned above has been carried out.
All the rotating components of the pump have been designed, defined and dimensioned, including the commercial parts, the bearings, the seal and the connection components. The body has not been included as part of this work, but other static components, as diffuser and volute were designed, whilst the bearing and the seal loads were calculated.
