dc.description.abstract | [EN] The motivation and justification of this project is to carry out the ¿Proyecto Final de Carrera¿ (PFC) as the last step for finishing my Industrial Engineering degree at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. The direction of this project has been shared by Dr. D. José Luis Gómez Ribelles, representing the Centro de Biomateriales of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and Dr. D. Ivan Krakovsky, representing the Department of Macromolecular Physics of the Mathematics and Physics Faculty of the Charles University of Prague, with the aim of developing and studying biocompatible materials with biomedical applications. This project is a part of a project of great magnitude, whose purpose is to analyze some epoxy networks in order to check their suitability for medical applications. Research and development of new materials is one of the fields where an industrial engineer is able to carry out his work. An industrial engineer has a great combination of scientific and technologic knowledge which is very useful to understand both the scientific work (research) and the search for applications depending on the characteristics of each new material (development). Synthesis, development and study of new polymeric hydrogels, objective of the present Project, is justified by the technological revolution provoked in the last years by the incoming of hydrogels in the researching fields of biomaterials. Nowadays, the study of polymeric systems with biomedical applications is one of the fields with the biggest social and economic importance in biomaterials researching; that is why new materials are being searched in order to reduce the high cost of the already existent ones and to find new applications. Moreover, the area of investigation of biomaterials influences basic fields of medicine, such as ophthalmology or surgery, which are fundamental in our society. For example, it can be said that more than a 50 % of the heart valves used in developed countries are made of biomaterials. | es_ES |
