dc.description.abstract [EN] The squirrel cage Induction Machine (IM) can be used as a generator connected to isolated electrical systems. When the required reactive power is provided by a local capacitors bank connected to its stator, the IM is able to generate energy without necessity of a separate dc source. Under these conditions the IM works as a Self-Excited Induction Generator (SEIG). In this thesis the steady-state operation of the SEIG is analyzed from experimental measurements. Operation under normal conditions and an initial approachment to the operation under special conditions, such as operation under unbalanced loads, is carried out. The influence of the capacitance value, level of load and load power factor is analysed. The transient operation of the SEIG has been also analyzed. The influence of the values of capacitors, IM magnetic characteristic and influence of the remnant magnetism levels of the IM on start-up of the SEIG have been considered. A mathematical model based on the nodal form of the equivalent circuit of the IM has been introduced and used to model its performance characteristics at the different operation points. A comparison of the modelled parameters with the experimental values is carried out in order to evaluate the validity of the model to its application on low power IM. es_ES
