A Critical Analysis of Gender Bias in ELT Textbooks in Tajikistan

Abstract

[EN] Since the first studies were carried out in the 1970s and 1980s concerning gender representation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks, many changes have been implemented by the main publishers involved in producing these materials in order to reduce the levels of discrimination and the invisibility of women and to ensure a balanced representation of both sexes. The aim of the present research work is to investigate whether the EFL textbooks in Tajikistan have followed this general tendency involving an improvement in the representation of the female gender, or if, on the contrary, there is still a degree of inequality as regards how males and females are portrayed, and what roles they have. Both quantitative and qualitative-descriptive analyses are carried out on 5 ELT textbooks to see how males and females are represented. The results show that females are greatly underrepresented, and the roles women have are highly stereotyped in both the texts and the illustrations in the textbooks. Recommendations are made for authors and publishers to improve gender quality in future editions of the textbooks.

[ES] Desde los primeros estudios en los años 70 y 80 del siglo 20 sobre la representación de género en los libros de text de aprendizaje de inglés como lengua extranjera, se han incluido muchos cambios en los materiales para mejorar la visibilidad de las mujeres y reducir los niveles de discriminación. El objetivo del presente estudio es averiguar si los libros de texto de la enseñanza de inglés como lengua extranjera en Tajikistan han seguido esta tendencia, o por el contrario, si todavía hay desigualdad con respecto a la representación de mujeres y hombres, y los roles atribuidos a cada uno. Se lleva a cabo un análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo-descriptivo de 5 libros de texto de aprendizaje del inglés en Tajikistan. Los resultados demuestran que las mujeres son poco visibles, y hay una mucha menor representación de ellas tanto en los textos como en las ilustraciones. Se hace unas recomendaciones a los autores y editoriales para que mejoren este aspecto de igualdad de género en futuras ediciones de los libros
