dc.description.abstract [EN] Large capacities of wind generators have already been installed and are operating in Germany (31.3GW) and Spain (22.8GW). Installations which are as significant in terms of proportion to system size are also established in Denmark (4.2GW), the All Island Power System of Ireland and Northern Ireland (2GW), and Portugal (4.5GW). Many others countries expect significant growth in wind generation such that the total currently installed capacity in Europe of 105GW is expected at least to reach the 120GW by 2015. Yet further increases can be expected in order to achieve Europe´s 2020 targets for renewable energy. The scale of this development poses big challenges for wind generation developers in terms of obtaining suitable sits, delivering large construction projects, and financing the associated investments from their operations. Such developments also impact the networks and it was to address the immediate transmission related challenges that the European Wind Integration Study (EWIS) was initiated by Transmission System Operators with the objectives of ensuring the most effective integration of large scale wind generation into Europe´s transmission networks and electricity system.
