| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | [EN] Because of the global energy crisis, the reduction of CO 2 emissions, as well as the increase of power plants efficiency has been one of the main engineering targets during the recent decades. In the attempt to mitigate the depletion of energy sources and the climate change, the development of alternative energies has increased. Technologies related to the use of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, hydrogen, biofuel and methanol have acquired a primary role in the development of more sustainable power generation systems. Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology is the main topic of this thesis. It consists of an electrochemical device which converts the energy contained in a fuel into electricity and heat. The principal advantages of SOFCs are among others, high volumetric energy density, light weight, long lifetime and modular design. They are suitable for electricity generation, transportation, desalination units and aircraft applications. However, the high operating temperatures make difficult their use for transportation while the aircraft applications are still under investigation. For these reasons it seems that the brighter future of this technology will be focused on the electricity generation. From the thermodynamic point of view, these power plants have already been proved to be effective. On the other hand, it is still uncertain whether they can be economically profitable or not. Even though nowadays the SOFC technology is still characterized by relatively high prices, the fact that the main companies of this technology continue investing in research may lead to more affordable prices, and thus SOFC could become an important solution for the emerging energetic problems. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the economic viability of combining SOFCs with existing power plants. The use of hybrid SOFC power plants enables to reach higher efficiencies, and this may lower the cost of the electricity production. The results suggest that this technology could be profitable for small-scale generation. These plants could be built close to residential buildings and universities in order to auto-produce their energetic requirements. If the electricity is sold at a price that is similar to the one paid by the householders, then the investment costs could get repaid in 15 years. On the other hand, it seems that this technology cannot compete with large-scale power plants because the actual spot prices in the electricity market would make them not economically viable when the electricity is sold directly to the grid. | es_ES |
