The reason for our research is to do an analysis to determine the potential opportunities for expansion in a given non-European expansion region for new construction of onshore and off-shore production and placement facilities of HWE international. As a result of that we will do a report with a portfolio market combination and strategic business model. Therefore, it is important to bring out a SWOT analysis to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to be able to do the report.
We use this tool because it help us to draw the necessary conclusions and it is the cross point between situation analysis and planning. With the confrontation matrix we can combine external factors with internal factors. It is part of our strategic process. The confrontation between the strengths and weaknesses inside the organization and the threats and opportunities created by the environment will give us a number of possible ‘routes’ for action, which we will lead to strategic choices for the organization and business opportunities.
One the other hand, using different weight factors we will be able to manage which region is the best to build a wind mill park. We will use three weight factors: A*B*X for each criteria. ‘A’ will be the weight factor with a scale between 1 (best/highest) and 5 (worst/lowest). In relation with B, it will be the PESTEL weight factor and X will be the weight factor criteria. Both of them will have a scale between 0.1-1.0. At the end we will have a total score for each region what will help us to decide which is the best region to build the wind farm.
Once having the total score, we see that Jiangsu (China) is the best region to build the wind park. In this region we will have opportunities and strengths and we will be able to avoid weaknesses and threats.
Therefore, it is important to bring out an external and internal analysis to see what strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats we have before setting our objectives. One doing the analysis we can make a plan and decide the best region.
As we have said before, the most logical choice for expansion is Jiangsu. This region of China has the most favorable economic and environmental climate for expansion outside of the EU. The strategy that we will bring out will be in relation with the most significant outcomes of the confrontation matrix: we recommend building offshore due to the high dense populated area in Jiangsu. Furthermore, calm waters, high wind speeds, abundance of harbors and sustainable competitive advantage are some good factors for offshore wind farms. In addition there is a high demand of wind energy in this region and let to train local engineers to be able to participate in this project.
It should be pointed out that as a preferred portfolio market combination we recommend:¨the Albatross¨ and ‘the Spoon bill’.
Further research should show the exact building locations, possibilities for maintenance and potential customers. We as a project group would be very pleased if we could do this research in the future!
