Morphological and functional characterization of the lumbar spine derived from MRI

Abstract

[EN] Lumbar spine is one of the main load-sharing structures of the human body. The understanding of the functional roles of the lumbar spine will help to design appropriate treatment for spinal disorders. This project aims at evaluating the morphological and functional properties of the lumbar spine in different supine positions. Specific geometries of 10 subjects in different supine positions have been reconstructed using MRI and image processing methods. A set of two global (length and curvature) and two local parameters (distance between gravity centers and angle between MRI table and the lumbar bodies) have been defined and computed. Statistical analyses have shown significant differences between two supine positions in middle intervertebral discs (D3-D2, D5-D4) and spinous processes middle bodies (P3-P2, P5-P4) and with less significance in the vertebrae bodies.

[ES] a columna lumbar es una de las principales estructuras de soporte de carga del cuerpo humano. El entendimiento del papel funcional de la columna lumbar ayudará a diseñar tratamientos adecuados para las patologías de columna. El objetivo de este proyecto es evaluar las caracteristicas morfológicas y funcionales de la zona lumbar en differentes posiciones decúbito supinas. Geometrias de 10 sujetos en diferentes posiciones supinas han sido reconstruidas usando imágenes de RM y métodos de procesado de imagen. Un conjuntos de dos parámetros globales (longitud y curvatura) y dos parámetros locales (distancia entre centros de gravedad y ángulo entre la mesa de RM y los cuerpos vertebrales) fueron definidos y tratados. Análisis estadísticos han mostrado diferencias significativas entre las dos posiciones supinas en los discos intervertebrales intermedios (D3-D2, D5-D4) y los procesos espinosos intermedios (P3-P2, P5-P4) y con menos significancia en los cuerpos vertebrales.
