Wireless sensor architecture for a home event management system

Abstract

Nowadays, most of the householders would like to reduce their home expenses, as for instance, electricity, heating or air conditioning. In addition, many of them might find useful to add new features to their everyday objects, this could be to make them capable to get connected to the internet, sending an e-mail or posting data to a social network. One way to achieve this goal is by deploying a Home Event Management System (HEMS) at the user’s house. This document aims to guide the reader through the design process and implementation of the optimal Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) that fulfils the requirements of an HEMS, in terms of power consumption, scalability and range among other properties. Thus, turning a conventional home into a self-aware environment, where the home itself will be able to extract useful information from the context and then, provide it to the householders. This could help them to improve the management of the home power consumption as well as enhance the user experience within a home environment.
