Abstract

[EN] Januário Godinho is a crucial figure in the transition of Portuguese architecture, the tradition of masters in the 20s to the situation marked by the achievements of the architects who began their activity in the 50s, inspired and taking as a basis the elements of each place. In the late 50s, arise in the international context, the first concerns that initiate the process of critical review of the Modern Movement. Januário Godinho distancing himself from Le Corbusier, whom he referred to as “too idealistic”, and whose influence marked the architecture of his generation of colleagues: Arménio Losa and Viana de Lima, approaches the only teacher, whom he surrendered to, F. Ll. Wright. He becomes familiar with Dutch architecture, contacts Dudock and adopts an upcoming project methodology close to Nordic “empiricism”. The expressionism of Mendelsohn and the classicism of A. Perret also marked many of his works. Furthermore, his architecture reveals a series of intercultural approaches not just visual but experimental and structural. The ability to integrate the achievements of modernity and the experience of tradition, respect for nature and the landscape, making it a reference of great significance that intercepts, in Portugal, all the problems of contemporary architecture.

[ES] Januário Godinho es una figura crucial en la transición de la arquitectura portuguesa, de la tradición de los maestros de los años 20 a la situación marcada por las realizaciones de los arquitectos que inician su actividad en los años 50, inspirándose y teniendo por base los elementos de cada lugar. En el final de los años 50 surgen, en el contexto internacional, las primeras inquietudes que inician el proceso de revisión crítica del Movimiento Moderno. Januário Godinho distanciándose de Le Corbusier, al cual se refería como “excesivamente idealista”, y cuya influencia marcaba la arquitectura de sus colegas de generación: Arménio Losa y Viana de Lima, se aproxima al único maestro, al cual se rindió, F. Ll. Wright. Conoce la arquitectura holandesa, contacta con Dudock y adopta una metodología proyectual próxima al “empirismo” nórdico. También el expresionismo de Mendelsohn y el clasicismo de A. Perret marcaron muchos de sus trabajos. Por otra parte, su arquitectura revela una serie de aproximaciones interculturales no solo de forma visual sino de carácter experimental y estructural. La capacidad de integrar las conquistas de la modernidad y la experiencia de la tradición, el respeto por la naturaleza y por el paisaje, transformándolo en una referencia de gran significado que anticipa, en Portugal, toda la problemática de la arquitectura contemporánea.
