[EN] Simone Galpin (1913-1973) is the first wife of architect André Wogenscky. Erased from history by the strong personality of Marta Pan or the voluntary forgetting of her husband, she re-emerges on the occasion of research carried out in 2018 on the review L’Homme et l’Architecture which she published with Wogenscky from 1945. to 1947. From this, the committed personality of Simone, noted author with many facets, like the different names she has borne, is reconstituted and is embedded in the base of a shared memory. Drawing teacher, painter, poet under the name of Danielle Janin, activist for the development of women and men, Simone Galpin also plays an eminent role in the projects of the rue de Sèvres workshop including the kitchen of the Unité d’habitation de Marseille in the continuity of the work undertaken by Charlotte Perriand. This article is also an opportunity to grasp the special relationship she has with Le Corbusier and her influence with the young people of the workshop to restore her to her place in the architectural history of the 20th century. [EN] With John Ruskin’s death in 1900, an intellectual and multifaceted man, who devoted his life to artistic theory and critic, departed. Antithetic in many aspects and comparable in terms of the extent, the contradictions, and the humanism of their works, in this article we follow Ruskin theory’s impact on the artistic dimension of ornament through some works by Le Corbusier. Throughout Le Corbusier’s formative years, we can distinguish a strong tendency towards visual experiences of romantic arts and picturesque values based on Ruskin’s principles. However, the swiss architect would drop this trend when he began to trust industrialization, new constructive techniques, and formal depuration. Once established in Paris, and after publishing his most revolutionary ideas, Le Corbusier retook, in 1925, the field of decorative arts in which he was trained. In order to prove the uselessness of ornament, the influence of Ruskin is perceived in Le Corbusier’s “new spirit” transformed as a guide that encourages to respect the knowledge of the past, the poetry in light and nature, and the value of emotion in architecture.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Anthropophagic Affairs: Le Corbusier, Paulo Prado and New World Revolutions(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-25) Ortiz dos Santos, Daniela[EN] This paper explores Le Corbusier’s relation to the American continent, yet with a particular focus on the visions he created before his trip of 1929. Not only did his vision go far beyond the sphere of the United States, but it also proved to be influenced by individuals with whom he shared admiration and affinity. This web of people encompassed patrons, politicians, painters and poets. Brazilian businessman Paulo Prado is here revealed as crucial protagonist, and for the first time amply discussed through this approach to Le Corbusier and the Americas. Prado went beyond the agency of those engaging lectures and housing commissions overseas. Primarily linked to the image of a financial patron, Prado's ideas of modernity and São Paulo identity were often obfuscated by the work of Antropofagia movement founding member Oswald de Andrade. And yet, Prado’s social, political and intellectual capital was critically important for the 1920s economic and cultural exchanges between Europe and Brazil. While examining the encounters between Prado and Le Corbusier, a new window of investigation and periodization is opened in order to construct Le Corbusier's connections with an elite eager to create a fresh interest in the cultural economy of the Transatlantic scene. Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , The void in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex: a legacy at an eastern scale(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-25) Quintana Guerrero, Ingrid; O'Byrne Orozco, María Cecilia[EN] The admittance of 17 of Le Corbusier’s architectural works on the UNESCO's heritage list, in July 2016, raised controversies that echo the criticisms made by the architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri (Rome, 1935 – Venice, 1984) regarding The Capitol Complex in Chandigarh (India), which was the only urban project included in the UNESCO’s dossier. Tafuri’s criticism focused on the vastness of the scale addressed, on the visual primacy of the project and on the supposed absence of a concept of unity. This paper rebuts the sheer understanding of the Capitol Complex strictly from its architecture and from a Western urban imaginary. The prejudices regarding modern urbanism, the unfinished condition of the work and its current state prevent many of its detractors from acknowledging the ongoing dialogue between the cultural background of Chandigarh, the inhabitant’s reception of the Capitol of the city, and Le Corbusier’s departure from the first phase of his own urban theory.
