    Technical Note: Time and dose response of blood non-esterified fatty acids to adrenergic stimulation in rabbit does

    [EN] The response in blood non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) to an adrenergic stimulation was studied in rabbit does. Two separate experiments were carried out to find the best time interval for blood sampling after an adrenergic stimulation and to find the appropriate dose for the challenging stimulus. In the first experiment, the time evolution was studied by injecting 9 animals intravenously with 50 mg of isoproterenol per kg of live weight (LW), blood being collected just before and 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 minutes after challenge. The highest NEFA responses, calculated as the difference between NEFA concentration in samples taken before and after adrenergic stimulation, were observed at 5 and 10 minutes after challenge (+0.70±0.15 and +0.77±0.15 mmol/L, respectively). In the second experiment, 6 animals were consecutively injected with isoproterenol (0.5, 5 or 50 mg/kg LW) and placebo (NaCl, 0.9%) with an interval of 1 hour; and blood was sampled just before and 7.5 minutes after challenge. The NEFA responses were significantly different from zero only when isoproterenol was injected at the dose of 50 mg/kg LW. Thus, we concluded that, among the tested dose concentrations of isoproterenol, 50 mg/kg LW was the most useful dose for adrenergic stimulation and that the adrenergic response was highest at 5 and 10 minutes after challenge.

    Effect of substituting groundnut cake for different levels of rice bran on growth and wool production of German Angora rabbits

    [EN] An experiment was conducted on 72 German Angora rabbits (42 youngs and 30 adults) divided into three groups to assess the effect of three experimental diets (T1, T2 and T3) with different levels of groundnut cake replaced by rice bran on their growth performance, wool yield, quality, and digestibility of nutrients. The inclusion rate of groundnut cake was decreased from 20 to 15 to 10% and that of rice bran increased from 13 to 18 to 23% in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The same diets presented 16.1, 15.1 and 14.0% DM of crude protein and 11.3, 11.1 and 10.9 MJ/kg DM of digestible energy, respectively. All animals were kept under similar housing and management conditions and the experiment was continued for a period of 225 days (3 shearings). No significant effects of the experimental diets on body weight gain, wool yield and wool attributes were observed in young and adult rabbits. However, the wool yield at the 2nd shearing was higher in the T1 group (P<0.05) indicating the positive effect of a diet higher in protein and energy on the wool production at an early stage of growth. Voluntary intake both of concentrates and roughages were not affected by the dietary treatment. The digestibility coefficients of dry matter and crude fibre were increased both in young and adult rabbits with the reduction of groundnut cake, while those of crude protein and ether extract were decreased in young rabbits only. From this experiment it can be concluded that groundnut cake can be safely replaced with rice bran in adult feeds at rates of up to 10% of the total content, while in young rabbits it may not be advantageous to go above a 5% level of replacement to avoid a substantial reduction in protein concentration, and the impairment of growth and wool production.

    Efficacy study of soluble bacitracin (Bacivet S(R)) in a chronically infected epizootic rabbit enteropathy environment

    [EN] The present study evaluated under field conditions the efficacy of bacitracin zinc soluble powder (Bacivet S(R) ) for the treatment of Epizootic Rabbit Enteropathy (ERE). A blinded study was conducted in compliance with the "Good Clinical Practice" guidance. The trial site was known to be chronically infected with ERE. A total of 384 weaned rabbits (30 days of age) were enrolled in the study. They were randomly distributed over 6 rows of cages located in the same experimental room. Two rows of cages remained untreated (control group), another 2 rows were treated with Bacivet S(R) for 14 days (T14) and 2 rows were treated with Bacivet S(R) for 21 days (T21). The medication was administered per row via the drinking water and initiated when at least one animal, showing clinical signs of ERE, died. The dose was adjusted daily according to the weight of the rabbits to achieve the target dose of 420 IU/kg body weight in the two treatment groups. Animals were observed daily for mortality, diarrhoea, tympany, or any other abnormal sign for 42 days post enrollment. Weights of the animals and feed intake were recorded on a weekly base. On the second day after the set-up of the trial, mortality already occurred with clear signs of ERE and the medication was initiated. On the primary evaluation parameter, mortality, both treated groups showed significant (P<0.01) better results than the control group with an overall mortality reaching 13.5%, 12.6% and 26.6% in T14, T21 and control groups, respectively. Considering only ERE confirmed mortality, differences were even more pronounced; 4.0% (T14), 6.3% (T21) and 14.1% (control), respectively. The occurrence of clinical signs (tympany and diarrhoea) was also reduced in medicated rabbits but this reduction was markedly higher for T21 treated rabbits (P<0.001 compared to control) than in the T14 group. A few days after the termination of the medication period, moderate mortality and clinical symptoms were observed in both medicated groups. These isolated cases were probably due to a recontamination through the untreated groups. Data of daily weight gain and feed intake showed a good agreement with the observed mortality and clinical symptoms. In conclusion, Bacivet S(R) proved its efficacy against ERE in a chronically infected environment for both tested treatment regimens.

    Recommendations and guidelines for applied reproduction trials with rabbit does

    [EN] This paper consists of a set of recommendations for applied reproduction trials with rabbit does. In the first part, the preparation of the experimental design is particularly developed (animals, size of the sample, housing conditions, breeding and feeding systems, establishing groups, insemination conditions, duration of the experiment). The second part defines some reproductive performances and how to measure them (sexual receptivity, fertility, prolificacy, mortality and growth of young, overall productivity). The last part provides a tool for data analysis. In the final considerations, it is emphasised that nowadays experiments have to take into account the recommendations related to animal welfare as well as the increasing sensitivity of consumers to considerations of meat quality. Reproduction traits are defined in an appendix.
