Le Corbusier and the construction of history

    (2025-05-29) Maingon, Claire
[EN] Sculpture played a significant role in Le Corbusier's architectural thinking, but also interested him as an artist and collector. In this article, we propose to explore Le Corbusier's interest in displaying sculpture in a number of exhibition pavilions he designed, in some of his collectors' interiors and gardens, and in his museum projects. The architect was not indifferent to the relationship between sculpture and space, to the nature of the pedestal, nor did he neglect the notions of viewpoints and dialogue between art and the visitor. Le Corbusier often chose specific sculptors, cubists and purists (in particular Jacques Lipchitz, Henri Laurens and, of course, his own creations from the 1940s onwards) and displayed them in an unconventional way in the interior, for example on the corner of a wall and high up, breaking with bourgeois practice but also with the habits of the architects and designers of the so-called Art Deco period.

    (2025-05-29) Luce Bohrer, Monica
[EN] Based on the analysis of Le Corbusier's Citrohan-type projects, this article aims to demonstrate how his designs for exhibitions and salons served as a testing ground for innovative architectural ideas. Using documents from the Fondation Le Corbusier, the study examines the role of these projects in the development of modern typologies applied to future projects. The Citrohan House project, designed in 1920 as a "machine for living," reflects Le Corbusier's vision of industrialization and standardization in architecture. Inspired by the 1914 Dom-Ino system, the Citrohan incorporates reinforced concrete structural elements, allowing for a flexible layout and a unified aesthetic. At the 1922 Salon d'Automne, Le Corbusier presented a model of the Citrohan House on pilotis, marking a turning point in his public recognition. The Salon became a key venue for showcasing his "Contemporary City" and avant-garde ideas, sparking both enthusiasm and controversy. In sum, the Citrohan House symbolizes his pursuit of modern, functional, and economical architectural solutions, while laying the foundation for a new paradigm in both collective and individual housing.

[EN] The response to climate and the sun played a central role in the architectural work of Carlos Raul Villanueva. Based on a documentary, photographic, and planimetric study, and on a review of bibliographic, journalistic, and academic material, the climate protection elements of the University City in Caracas are analyzed, such as canopies, sunshades, parasols, and openwork concrete blocks, many of which allude to those developed by Le Corbusier around the 1930s -particularly evident in his projects for Africa and South America- the formal and expressive grammar constitutive of an architecture attentive to both the elements and contextual factors, as well as to vernacular constructions. Around 1945, Villanueva incorporated protective elements that he reinforced, particularly in the contemporary redefinition of the university complex around 1950, precisely at a time when the monumentality of raw concrete and its plastic and symbolic use, as well as concerns about climate and light in the third world, played an important role in the definition of new protective measures that referred to a patrimonial and identitary construction, an artistic symbol of Venezuela's modernizing ideal.

On Le Corbusier’s work, transcendence, and legacy … and much more, a conversation with William J. R. Curtis
    (2025-05-29) Lapunzina, Alejandro
[EN] The article presents a reflective and personal conversation between Alejandro Lapunzina and historian William J. R. Curtis, exploring the depth, influence, and transcendence of Le Corbusier’s architectural legacy. Lapunzina recounts his first encounter with Curtis in 1987 and describes how Curtis’s interpretative approach to architecture—focused on ideas, form, and integrity—shaped his own intellectual development. Through their exchanges over decades of teaching and travel, Curtis emerges as a scholar who combines historical rigor with moral independence, defending the preservation of Le Corbusier’s work and advocating for architectural authenticity. The second part details the 2025 interviews held at Curtis’s home in Cajarc, France, where discussions spanned from Le Corbusier’s heritage and restoration issues to broader reflections on art, education, and the continuity of modern ideals. The resulting text is both an homage to Curtis’s lifelong dedication and a meditation on architecture’s universal dimension and enduring humanist spirit.

Ideas and Forms: a Conversation with William J. R. Curtis
    (2025-05-29) Curtis, William J. R.; Lapunzina, Alejandro
[EN] his in-depth conversation between Alejandro Lapunzina and William J. R. Curtis traces the intellectual journey of one of the foremost historians of modern architecture. Curtis recounts his early discovery of Le Corbusier’s Oeuvre Complète at age 15, his first encounter with the Pavillon Suisse, and his academic training at the Courtauld Institute and Harvard University, where he wrote Le Corbusier at Work: The Genesis of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (1978). He describes how field observation, travel, and cross-cultural experiences shaped his approach to history and criticism. Curtis also revisits the making of Modern Architecture Since 1900 (1982), conceived as a wide-ranging and balanced synthesis of modern architecture worldwide. He interprets Le Corbusier’s work as a continuous dialogue between ideas and forms, where structural rationality merges with spiritual and poetic dimensions. The interview portrays Curtis as both scholar and traveler, committed to understanding architecture through direct experience, human meaning, and artistic imagination.

[EN] This article analyses the way in which Le Corbusier articulated the relationship between architecture and engineering in his 1935 text Collective Needs and Civil Engineering and in relation to the figure of the constructeur, seen as a synthesis of the architect and the engineer. Starting from his interest in mobility infrastructures railways, roads, maritime and air routes and in civil engineering works, Le Corbusier develops a reflection on technical modernity, the machinist city, and the role of collective housing. Drawing on his writings, projects, and public positions, the article traces the evolution of his thought, marked by a productive tension between plastic emotion and constructive rationality. The figure of the constructeur thus emerges as a response to fundamental collective needs, embodying both the functional demands and the poetic aspirations of modern architecture.
