    2010. Francis Street
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Angelo Candalepas and Associates
[EN] An inhabitable landscape, this building emerges out of the surrounding streetscape to embrace Bondi s arc of sun and surf. Clad in rawunpainted materials, it expresses a singular presence atypical of multi-unit dwellings. Finishes have been selected to weather the coastal environment. High-quality, long-lasting materials such as sandstone, off-form concrete and rendered brick achieve both tactility and durability. A muscular concrete frame allows for long spans and large openings to the breeze and sweeping views.

[EN] Core to the proposition is the amenity embodied in the plan. The architectural composition in the plan enables amenity to adjacent properties by seeking a departure from the street-wall forms at its key intersection. This building therefore does not follow the now-familiar proposition of urban forms and urban walls. The interiors, in-turn, yield to the formal nature of the hand-form in the plan and such that privacy or unnecessary (and harming) views of the poorly developed adjacent sites are masked for the benefit of distance views to the inhabitants.

    2006. Pindari
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Angelo Candalepas and Associates
[EN] The staged Pindari development consists of 66 units and townhouses, located on an 8,000 square metre site. The development is made up of three distinct blocks, each occupying one corner of the L-shaped site. Block C was completed in 2006. Block A and B are the second and final stage of a masterplan for the brownfield site completed in 2009. The locality is predominantly medium density of three storey walk-ups and single dwelling houses. The site and locality are benefited by a series of established trees that have been retained in the building s siting, design and construction.

(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Angelo Candalepas and Associates
[EN] When our client bought the house in 2001, he asked me to design an extension on the land adjacent. I approached Glenn Murcutt, the original architect of Cullen House, at the time, who helped and encouraged the design throughout. His lasting advice to my client was that you must not interfere with the design process (too much anyway).

[EN] Located in the heart of Sydney, 116 Bathurst Street (The Castle) is a 37-storey (excl 8 level basement) mixed-use tower combining residential, hotel and retail space. The tower s simple architectural form emerges from an intricate structure that sensitively cantilevers over the 1876, heritage-listed, Porter House. The tower sits atop a podium, composed of elements that acknowledge the local character, reflecting a sense of craftsmanship that stems from the site s history.

    2016. President Avenue
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Angelo Candalepas and Associates
[EN] The site incorporates the busy President Avenue to the north and wonderful views to the Royal National Park to the south. This created a problem since we needed to ensure the living spaces received ample sunlight access to the north but also addressed to this wonderful aspect to the south. We created a plan that situated living spaces to the north and their respective kitchens and dining rooms to the south. This allowed for all the units to achieve ample natural sunlight access but also to have the ability to be cross ventilated right through the living spaces. The amenity provided to these apartments is therefore synonymous with the amenity enjoyed by detached dwellings in the local area.

[EN] The project seeks to establish a new home for the Australian Islamic Mission and provide a complex of buildings to facilitate learning and religious worship for local community members that follow the Muslim faith. The development is to be constructed in two stages, with Stage 1 being the construction of the Mosque accommodating approximately 300 worshippers and Stage 2 being the construction of community buildings. A robust structure, sculpted from concrete, has been designed to utilize passive solar and environmental strategies to moderate the comfort.

[EN] Louis I. Kahn stands out for his essential approach to architecture, seeking the origin of each idea as the key to shaping his buildings. Kahn values construction as much as the idea, believing that the essence of a building must be reflected in its construction process. He explores the nature of materials and their constructive logic, aiming to express the load-bearing system in the most elegant way possible, without the need for added cladding. Among his most significant contributions are his experiences with concrete prefabrication, highlighting the Richards Medical Research Laboratories as a key work where he synthesizes his theoretical and practical principles. This building is notable for its clear articulation of spaces and its integration of light, materials, and construction technique. His previous projects, such as the Trenton Bath House, are fundamental to his later development in the Richards Laboratories, reflecting his constant quest for an architectural order that combines tradition and modernity. These experiences are considered valuable lessons in contemporary construction.

John Hejduk: 1954-1974. Sobre la dimensión didáctica de su obra arquitectónica
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) García-Escudero, Daniel; Bardí-Milà, Berta
[EN] In 1974, John Hejduk condensed two decades of architectural exploration into a series of sketches known as Chronologies, spread across nine sheets that organize his most influential works. These drawings outline three critical periods represented by the Texas Houses (1954-1962), Diamond Projects (1962-1967), and Wall Houses (1968-1974), each documented in key exhibitions and publications such as John Hejduk Houses (IAUS, 1980), Three Projects (Cooper Union, 1969) and Fabrication ' (Cooper Union, 1974). This body of work, rooted in his teaching at Texas, Yale, and Cooper Union, expresses a taxonomic approach to architecture, highlighting the formulation of an abstract formal vocabulary. These projects, mostly unbuilt, not only reflect an architectural learning based on fundamental elements and their systematic organization, but also served as a preamble to his emblematic didactic exercises: The Nine-Square Grid Problem, The Cube Problem and The Juan Gris Problem. This integration of theory and didactics highlights the cohesion between Hejduk's speculative practice and his innovative pedagogy, emphasizing how his formal research profoundly influenced contemporary architectural teaching.

Bennelong Blues. Apuntes desde la paradoja
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Peñín Llobell, Alberto
[EN] The relevance of the Sydney Opera House transcends its architecture, becoming both a frequent reference and a recurring source of study and testimony to the upheavals of the profession in the second half of the twentieth century. Like all great works of architecture, as a repository of the discipline’s knowledge, its reinterpretation from another era sheds light on new nuances through the lens of a present devoid of references. This text proposes a reexamination of both the project and its production process in order to suggest a series of observations superimposed on this palimpsest of considerations such as the connection with nature and life, the subsequent rebirth of form, the veiled recourse to repetition and geometry, or in another register, the issue of professional and technical commitment, multidisciplinarity as a condition and a critique of current neoliberal practices. The scope of these considerations is located in the interplay between the universal, running through more ambiguous and contradictory disciplinary principles than it may seem, and the local, discreetly infiltrating the architectural culture of many current practices such as the one included in this issue of the journal.

Temas de interés en la arquitectura de Angelo Candalepas
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2024-10-28) Candalepas, Angelo
[EN] As time travels through me, I discover attributes of the work created in my office which cause me to reflect on certain subject areas; reflections which are perhaps brought to existence when contributing to any such publication. I can observe in my own work, momentarily and only in retrospect, a certain set of themes of interest.
