    Effects of chromium yeast supplementation on growth performances and meat quality in rabbits

    [EN] The aim of the trial was to estimate the effect of dietary Cr-yeast addition to growing rabbit diet on growth performance, meat composition, muscle fatty acid profile and Cr content of meat and edible organs. Ninety-six male rabbits were weaned at 35 days and divided into 4 groups (T1, T2, T3 and T4) of 24 each. The animals were fed ad libitum for the whole trial (44 days) with pelletted diets differing in the presence of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), grown or not on Cr-enriched medium. The control diet (T1) did not contain yeast, the T2 diet was supplemented with non-enriched yeast, while the T3 and T4 diets were supplemented with Cr(III)-enriched yeast to increase the concentration of Cr by 0.400 mg/kg and 0.800 mg/kg, respectively. Control diet (T1) contained 0.830 mg/kg Cr due to the presence of the trace element in raw materials. The dietary treatment did not affect either the mortality, or the growing and slaughtering performance, or the incidence of kidneys, scapular and perirenal fat on carcass weight. A reduction in the liver incidence on the carcass was observed in the T3 group compared to the T4 (4.36% vs 5.67%; P<0.01). Hind leg proportion on carcass weight and its muscle to bone ratio, as well as chemical, physical and organoleptic characteristics of meat did not differ among groups. The presence of Cr(III) in the feed did not alter the fatty acid profile of muscular fat or the chemical composition, pH and colour of the meat. The Cr concentration in meat and edible organs (liver and kidneys) was not affected by treatment. In conclusion, Cr-yeast supplementation had no positive effects on the rabbit growth performance and carcass and meat quality and did not increase the Cr(III) content of meat for human consumption.

    Efficacy of Amylofeed (R) in growing rabbit diets

    [EN] The efficacy of Amylofeed(R) (an amylase, b-glucanase and b-xylanase enzyme complex) was evaluated on growing rabbit performance. Three isonutritive diets (medicated with bacitracine) were formulated corresponding to the levels of Amylofeed(R): 0 (diet A), 400 (diet B) and 500 (diet C) ppm. Four hundred and fifty six and four hundred and eighty New Zealand White x Californian rabbits weaned at 35 days of age, weighing 910 and 960 g as average, respectively, were fed with the experimental diets for three weeks after weaning in two experiments. From 56 to 65 days of age animals were fed with a common non-medicated diet. In the first assay, the mortality during the experimental period was very low (2.6%) and treatments had no effect on any of the performance traits studied. In the second assay a higher incidence of diarrhoea and associated mortality occurred with respect to the first. In these circumstances, the supplementation of feed with 400 or 500 ppm of Amylofeed(R) significantly (P=0.03) reduced mortality from 27.0 to 19.7 and 14.8%, respectively. An improvement of feed efficiency (by 16%; P=0.03) was observed in animals fed with the two enzyme supplemented diets in the overall period (35 to 65 of age) with respect to the animals fed with the control diet. It is concluded that enzyme supplementation has beneficial effects on mortality, feed efficiency and growth of fattening rabbits when the incidence of intestinal disorders and mortality in the control group are of relevance.

    Ultrasound measurements of perirenal fat thickness to estimate the body condition of reproducing rabbit does in different physiological states

    [EN] Sixty New-Zealand x Californian multiparous rabbit does were used to evaluate the capability of a computerized ultrasound system to estimate changes in body condition at different physiological states: parturition, 21st day of lactation, weaning and 28th day of gestation. Perirenal fat weight and carcass energy concentration were significantly correlated with live weight (r = 0.58 and 0.49, respectively; P<0.001) and ultrasound measurement of perirenal fat thickness (r = 0.51 and 0.45; P<0.001). The inclusion of quadratic and cubic terms of the perirenal fat thickness as independent variables significantly increased the coefficient of determination and lowered the residual standard deviation of the models, based on the live weight of the animals, to estimate the perirenal fat weight and the carcass energy concentration (P<0.01). However, these general models tended to overestimate the perirenal fat weight and the body energy concentration of lean animals (<50 g of perirenal fat weight or 8.0 MJ kg-1 of carcass energy concentration). When specific multiple regression equations for predicting perirenal fat weight and body energy of multiparous does were developed in function of their physiological state, prediction accuracy of equations improved for rabbits at parturition (R2 = 0.72 and 0.67), 21 days of lactation (R2 = 0.84 and 0.67) and weaning (R2 = 0.76 and 0.65). No model was able to predict either perirenal fat weight or carcass energy concentration of the multiparous rabbit does at 28th day of gestation. In conclusion, excluding animals in late gestation, ultrasound measurement of perirenal fat thickness seems to be a useful technique for in vivo estimation of the body condition of reproducing multiparous rabbit does.

    A note on linkage between the angora and fgf5 genes in rabbits

    [EN] The angora mutation in mice corresponds to a large deletion in the fgf5 (fibroblast growth factor 5) exon 1. Two pairs of primers were chosen in the human fgf5 coding sequence in order to amplify two fragments of the rabbit gene. One biallelic polymorphism was demonstrated in each fragment. The four alleles were cloned and sequenced. A random sample of unrelated angora (n=17) and wild-type control animals (n=15) were analysed for both polymorphisms. The observed haplotype frequencies show a clear separation between the two populations. Informative families were created by backcrossing to measure linkage between the angora and fgf5 loci. No recombinant was observed between them, in 56 meiosis, proving a tight linkage between both genes.
