[EN] A profound study of historic masonry with today’s knowledge and without jumping to conclusions or applying modern criteria to ancient heritage is the basis of a restoration project. The case of the dome of San Miguel de los Reyes in Valencia provides the authors with an excuse to explain their approach to the problem and describe their analysis and calculation procedures. The computerised mapping of the results developed by these authors affords an immediate view of the behaviour and defects of the dome, a necessary step before seeking a solution for its structural reinforcement.

    Planimetría del Alcázar de Sevilla
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2003-12-16) Almagro Gorbea, Antonio
[EN] The presentation of the meticulous metric mapping of the Alcázar of Seville provides us with an opportunity to make a reflection about the importance of drawing in the world of architecture and especially in restoration. The rigorous planimetric documentation of Spanish historico-artistic sites is a task that has not always been carried out. On this occasion, we must thank the Management and the Foundation of the Alcázar, and the great professionalism of the authors of the planimetry, who already illustrated the pages of this magazine with their works on the Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo in Granada (LOGGIA no. 4) and the Umayya Fortress in Amman, Jordan (LOGGIA no. 11).

[EN] The cleaning, conservation and maintenance of the stone surface of the Serranos Towers has also taken into account the sculpted figures that decorate this austere Valencian Gothic monument. It was an opportunity to discover new historic and technical data about the few remains of the original ornamentation and of the many replications made in the early 20th century: the original designs, the restoration grafts, the substitutions, the finishes... The article presents a detailed description of the preliminary studies and the work performed on these sculptural pieces.

[EN] The recent restoration of the emblematic Serranos Towers carried out by an interdisciplinary team of specialists was an excuse to delve into the history and masonry of the towers, from their initial building and use as a prison to the restorations works practised in the 19th century and subsequent repairs. The cleaning of the walls permitted a direct study of the masonry, which provided a great deal of information that complemented the rigorous historical investigation. The maintenance scheme planned for the future is an interesting proposal, where good sense prevails over improvisation, so often a reality in the restoration of monuments today.

[EN] Santa Quiteria bridge in Castellón is a unique piece in the typology of medieval bridges in that it is built with arches instead of vaults. Apart from seeking an aesthetic recuperation worthy of its value as a monument, the restoration described also addresses the solution for its structural pathologies by attempting to respect traditional constructional systems while using innovating methods.

    El teatro circo de Albacete
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2003-12-16) Gutierrez Mozo, Elia
[EN] The Teatro Circo in Albacete is one of the emblematic buildings created at the time of the city’s awakening to 19th century modernity. Its interesting double role as a theatre and a circus was originally feasible thanks to the possibility of turning the stalls into a circus ring. After the heated polemic brought about by its restoration, this article constitutes a calm, reasoned opinion based on a reflection about the history of the building and the philosophy behind the intervention.

[EN] This comparative study of the stone surfaces of three Venetian buildings, Sansovino’s Library, Corner Palace and Foscari Arch, is both interesting and original, since it shows that blackened surfaces do not necessarily mean the presence of deterioration phenomena such as black crust and sedimentation, but often correspond to intentional patinas applied in order to protect the stone or in colour matching treatments practised during subsequent works. The article makes a double contribution to the culture of conservation: the existence a tradition of protection and conservation treatments on stone walls and the current need to conserve these intentional patinas.

[EN] How has Gaudí’s work been restored? This is the question asked and answered by Javier Rivera, a professor of the History of Restoration, in this article, in the light of the modern theory of “critical restoration” and the principles laid down in the Cracow Charter 2000. In the next few pages, there follows a detailed and critical description of the restoration works carried out on the work of the Catalan maestro over the last twenty-five years.

[EN] The Ise Shrine in Japan is made up of a group of 109 shrines with primitive forms that are destroyed and rebuilt on an adjacent site every twenty years. There are records that this curious phenomenon related with Shintoist animism has been taking place at least since the 8th century. This article strives to reveal the meaning underlying this process, discover the possible implications and consequences of this strange unbuilding and rebuilding practice in restoration in Japan and the West and explain the reasons for the fascination exerted by the humble forms of this shrine on leading members of the Modern Movement.
