Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , The impact of the Special Agricultural National Insurance System Reform on Canary Agriculture(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Cáceres-Hernández, José Juan; González-Gómez, José Ignacio; Nuez-Yánez, Juan Sebastián; Ramos-Henríquez, José Manuel[EN] This paper deals with the potential effects on the profitability of Canary Islands’ farms due to the Special National Insurance System for Agricultural Workers Reform which was put in place in 2009 by the Spanish Government Ministry of Labour and Immigration. The effect on the employers’ National Insurance contributions per working day is analysed. Based on this analysis, the impact on costs and benefits in several farms which cultivate bananas, tomatoes or flowers is evaluated. According to the results, it is concluded that these farms cannot afford the costs’ increase derived from the reform if profitability per product unit or per surface should be maintained. On the other hand, the effect of changes in the contribution basis is softened to a great extent by the application of compensatory deductions, which are likely to disappear on the long term.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Impact of an increase in the capacity of power generation from biomass in co-generation plants in Andalusia(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Cardenete, Manuel Alejandro; González, José Manuel; Pablo-Romero, Mª del Pópulo; Román, Rocío; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Universidad Pablo de Olavide; Generalitat de Catalunya[EN] The paper estimates the regional economic impact of renewable energy development (inv) based on the use of biomass. The regional level is Andalusia. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that achieves the goal of renewable energy development set in Andalusian Sustainable Energy Plan (PASENER) 2007-2013. To estimate the economic impact, a General Equilibrium Model (CGE) is used based on the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) updated for Andalusia in 2008. The results show that if the goal of PASENER is met, there might be an increase production of 4.02%.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Performance of traditional cooperatives: the portuguese Douro wine cooperatives(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Rebelo, João; Caldas, José; Matulich, Scott C.[EN] Globalization is challenging the very core of cooperative governance and ownership decision, especially in Southern European countries, like Portugal, where a large number of producers are organized in traditional and Mediterranean-style agricultural cooperatives. This paper analyses the effects of governance and control variables related with size over two alternative indicators of performance: revenues transferred to members/patrons and capital structure. The results suggest that these cooperatives have difficulties being sustainable in the more competitive global wine markets, if they follow, essentially, a practice of maximum patronage refund, reducing their capacity to improve leverage and to finance more profitable, but risky, long run investments.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Entrepreneurship, immigrants and rural communities: The case of Spain(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Mancilla, Claudio; Viladomiu, Lourdes; Guallarte, Carlos; Universidad de Los Lagos; Ministerio de Educación, Chile[EN] Many rural areas have experienced development downturn throughout most of the 20th century. Usually, immigrants have been considered as labour force. However, they often choose to become entrepreneurs. Relevant literature suggests evidences that immigrants are more entrepreneurially active than local inhabitants. The objective of this study is to verify how local conditions in rural areas as well as characteristics of immigrants influence individuals to become entrepreneurs. The results indicate that an immigrant has a higher likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur. Residing in a rural community positively influences the likeliness of being involved in entrepreneurial activities; however this is mainly true for Spaniards, since immigrants are not influenced by rurality.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Optimal distribution of intermodal transport: Application to perishables exports(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Pérez-Mesa, Juan Carlos; Salinas Andújar, José Antonio; Ministerio de Fomento; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación[EN] This paper discusses the benefits using intermodal transport for fruit and vegetables. Multi-Criteria Decision Making techniques are applied for optimal allocation between land or intermodal transport. Also a sensitivity analysis is made for knowing changing priorities in decision-makers (exporters) to encourage a modal shift. The results show savings in intermodal transport costs in relation to land transport cost. However the exporter must assume increased time of delivery of goods.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , The new institutional economics and the economics of natural resources: Commons, institutions. Governance and institutional change(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Caballero Miguez, Gonzalo; Garza Gil, María Dolores[EN] In recent decades, the New Institutional Economics has brought about the “return of institutions” to the economic mainstream, and institutional theory and analysis have been developed from Ronald Coase’s notion of transaction costs and Douglass North’s view on institutions. The Nobel Prize award in Economics to Oliver Williamson and Elinor Ostrom in 2009 has pointed out the relevance of the new institutional approach. Natural Resource Economics has included the institutional determinants of the management of natural resources into its research agenda. In this sense, the advances of the New Institutional Economics allows the development of institutional analysis in the field of the Economics of Natural Resources, such as Elinor Ostrom’s work has shown. This paper presents an integral and updated perspective of the foundations of the New Institutional Economics that constitute a set of theoretical inputs for the analysis of institutions and governance in the management of natural resources.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Economic regional impacts of water transfers: the role of factor mobility in a case study of the agricultural sector in the Balearic Islands(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Tirado, Dolores; Lozano, Javier; Gómez, Carlos Mario; Ministerio de Medio Ambiente[EN] Using a CGE model for the Balearic Islands, we simulate the effects of an agricultural water market in the farming sector facing reductions in the water endowment. The market lessens the negative effects on farming communities of short-term water restrictions associated with cyclical droughts. However, in scenarios of permanent reductions, such as those envisaged by global warming predictions or those that result from the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive, a water market may aggravate the negative effects of water shortage. Therefore, the paper shows that generalizations cannot be made about the effects of water markets on farming communities.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Emissions of methane (CH4) in the Catalan agro-food subsystem: An alternative input-output analysis(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Navarro, Francisco; Alcántara, Vicent; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; Generalitat de Catalunya[EN] In this paper we carry out a research of the CH4 emissions related to the Catalan agro-food sector through an alternative or at least complementary, input-output subsystems analysis, which is a useful tool to study the productive structure of the different sectors that make up an economy. The application of this technique allows the decomposition of the subsystem in different effects depending on the existing interindustry linkages with all the production sectors of the economy inside as well outside the subsystem. Results highlights the relevance of intrasectorial relations within the agro-food industry subsystem, which shows a significant autonomy respect to this type of emissions with regard to the rest of the economy. This feature guides the sort of environmental policies to be implemented in order to reduce the atmospheric impact of such activity.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Analysis of environmental impact arising from economic activities. Application in a regional economy(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011-10-08) Flores, Mónica; Mainar, Alfredo J.[EN] The goal of this paper is to analyse the households’ environmental impact in a regional economy, including the household direct impact as well as the impact associated with the production of goods and services of the household demand. Moreover, per capita ecological impacts for each household category according to income level are obtained. We focus on water consumption, and water and atmospheric pollution. The framework is based on a regional SAMEA (Social Accounting Matrix and Environmental Accounts), and vertically integrated environmental indicators using the Leontief model. An application is carried out for the Aragon case.
