Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Izquierda y derecha: Oscar Niemeyer y la dictadura militar en Brasil(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Fernandes, Luiz Gustavo Sobral[EN] Although Niemeyer is recognized as a celebrated and well-studied architect, passages of his professional career are yet to be explored. Without doubt, one of them is the relationship that the architect had with the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), an admittedly right-wing government. If, on the one hand, it is true that Niemeyer was a convinced and declared communist, it is also certain that he continued to work for the military throughout the 21 years of dictatorship that was established in Brazilian territory - even making projects that would be a symbol of Brazilian military institutions. This article seeks to delve into the architect's life and his relationship with this repressive political period in Brazil, presenting projects and situations that happened in Europe and within Brazilian territory. It gathers material disseminated in archives and elaborates a documented chronology to clarify events and debates.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Pragmatismo y poética de Javier Carvajal en el diseño de la casa Biddle Duke(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Moncada García, Nicolás; Antón Sancho, Javier[EN] The Biddle House is possibly one of the most iconic suburban houses in the Sotogrande resort. In this scattered American style urbanization, there are many large avenues, sports complexes and, above all, the traditional Andalusian architecture of the villas and farmhouses. And there you can find, apart from this house by Javier Carvajal, some other examples of rationalist architecture such as the golf club by Luis Gutiérrez Soto, or a hotel by José Antonio Corrales. This article seeks to address the context and architectural analysis of the Biddle Duke family house. In it one can venture a dichotomy between the pragmatic and the poetic. Its compositional strategy revolves around a simultaneously classic and modern cloister, enshrined and at the same time filtered towards the landscape. This patio that articulates the whole project reaches here a poetic and almost monumental dimension, which is combined with the repetitive rationality of the succession of groin vaults. And this double condition impregnates the entire domestic space. There, the Mediterranean essence of the patio coexists with the rationalism of the modular grid; the austerity of the materials synchronizes with the poetry of the white volumetry of the vaults; and the sobriety of the finishes concurs with the formal purity of the arch work.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , La efímera vida en San Luis del pabellón de España de Javier Carvajal para la Feria Mundial de Nueva York 1964-1965(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Delgado Orusco, Eduardo; Jerez Abajo, Enrique[EN] This article uses the Spanish Pavilion by Javier Carvajal at the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair as a case study to examine the physical survival of some pavilions. Strictly speaking, a pavilion is a tent and a satellite. National exhibition pavilions are ephemeral satellites of their country, but they cannot be defined as tents if they cannot easily be dismantled, transferred, and reconstructed. The success of their second life depends on several essential aspects such us their construction technology or size, but also on other circumstances, such as how they manage to adapt to conditions different from the original ones, and their subsequent economic viability. The conflict between these factors has often led to failure. After the reconstruction in 1959 in the Casa de Campo in Madrid of the pavilion for Brussels 1958 by Corrales and Molezún, its New York counterpart enjoyed similar luck as it was rebuilt in St. Louis in 1969 as the “Home of Hispanic peoples.” However, it soon failed and became a hotel. Today, only some traces of this architectural ideal are still recognizable, and instead it lives on in our memory, in some publications, and in some recent architecture as a conceptual remnant. The new conditions meant that what was devised to be ephemeral ended up being ephemeral, although its ideas have transcended time. As this is where its true survival lies, why pervert it by transforming the exceptional into the ordinary?Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , El sueño del hormigón. La formación del ideal(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Ramos Abengózar, José Antonio; Moreno Hernández, Álvaro[EN] Architecture made in concrete has been revealing its own characteristics due to the qualities of the material and its unique place in construction, which has been quite clear throughout history, even above the styles, dominating theories or current design concerns. This possible independence places it in a different sphere, that should be approached from its material reality, as a method that contributes new information, knowledge, and design possibilities. This paper deals with laying the foundations for this new approach where the material wants to be aware if its own potential so that the architectural projects can benefit from it. Due to its ability to change, it is difficult to understand the nature of concrete: it could be strictly humble, be the central focus or a mix of both; yet we consider it to be another fact to develop the ideal and although production disguises and disperses it, in essence it helps to strengthen this final desire. The aim is to establish an extracted ideal of its extensive qualities. To do this, a temporal process is identified, not chronological but deductive, where each line of reasoning is supported by the previous one in order to reach the final thesis, the origin of new research.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Vigne Nuove. Construcción a gran escala y hábitat social en la periferia de Roma(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Cervero Sánchez, Noelia[EN] The Piano di Zona Vigne Nuove Project by (Lucio Passarelli, Alfredo Lambertucci and Claudio Saratti, 1971-1979), a housing complex of 524 dwellings with common services located north of the urban continuum of Rome adapts some of the most important functional and constructive aspects in experimentation that has been taking place in Europe in the field of collective housing since the middle of the 20th century. The tectonic of the concrete acts as a nexus of a double system, horizontal which channels the public elements for facilities and services and vertical that contains housing cells intended for a diverse population. The research methodology stems from the relevance of both systems, public and private to give form to the analysis, establishing a relation with contemporary works. The project shows the overcoming of limitations of the functional city, by introducing intermediate elements and spaces of transition and social unity, and an improvement on traditional construction methods by establishing an effective standardization and an emergent prefabrication. The recuperation and highlighting of the work that this study entails, reveals a critical phase of renewal and maturity of modern architecture, and promotes it applicability in the evolution of the social housing and large-scale construction.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Pilestredet 77-79 Oslo, Noruega(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Arkitekter, Reiulf Ramstad[EN] P77-79 introduces innovative and attractive apartments in Fagerborg, a residential neighbourhood in Oslo. The project is designed sensitively to respond to the surrounding historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. It consists of three buildings increasing gradually from four to six floors.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Centro Cultural Stjørdal, Noruega(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Reiulf Ramstad, Reiulf Ramstad[EN] The Cultural Center of Stjørdal is an important node of the community, both locally and in the region. The building is a place for all people interested in culture to explore and develop their abilities and talents. Its facilities consists of a library, youth center, theatre and concert halls, cinemas, and venues for dance, music, media, art and other activities. In addition it incorporates a community church and office spaces, within the same envelope.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Ruta Turística Nacional Selvika, Havøysund, Noruega(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Arkitekter, Reiulf Ramstad[EN] The objective of this project is quite simply to single out and magnify the experience of walking from the roadside down to the seaside at this very special place. Therefore, a chief concern was to slow down this movement and make the path itself a means of refocusing the experiential mode: a measured, restrained approach that creates awareness. The primary functional concern was universal accessibility. Instead of opting for a dual solution with staircase and ramp, we came up with the notion of making the ramp the common entryway and developing it into the integral character of the project.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Ruta Turística Nacional Trollstigen, Noruega(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Arkitekter, Reiulf Ramstad[EN] The project enhances the experience of the Trollstigen plateau’s location and nature. Thoughtfulness regarding elements and materials underscore the site’s nature and character, and well-adapted, functional facilities augment the visitor experience.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Claridad sobre la niebla: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-04-27) Millán Gómez, Antonio[EN] In their struggle with nature, Norwegian architects learned to love nature by making –this was the original meaning of the word poiesis. Four metaphorically named paradigms of Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter's ways of making are discussed here, after a brief general framework: proceeding from less urban situations to a more strategic complexity of regional infrastructures. The reader will find treatments of space-time in Selvika, changing memory and nature in Trollstigen, the effort to complete an unfinished sector respectfully in Pilestredet, Oslo, and a strategic, cultural centre in Stjørdal, Trondheim: diversity, intensity, simplicity, sense, a subtle architectural manifesto.
