    Influence of Detail Level in Acoustic Modeling of Heritage Buildings. Case of the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia

    [EN] Acoustic modeling of heritage buildings presents a significant challenge due to the architectural complexity of these spaces and the need to preserve their authenticity. In particular, the precision of the virtual model in historical environments largely depends on the level of detail applied during simulation. This study examines the influence of detail level in acoustic modeling applied to the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia, a prominent example of Gothic civil architecture in Europe. Using ODEON software, three virtual models of the main hall were developed with varying levels of detail, from a high-precision model to a simplified representation. The results show that a highly detailed model increases computational costs, while a reduction in detail leads to greater dispersion in results, especially at low frequencies. This research highlights the importance of finding an appropriate balance in detail level, providing reliable acoustic estimates without compromising efficiency. These findings contribute to ongoing discourse on heritage conservation practices, emphasizing how simulation technologies can aid in preserving acoustic integrity while addressing practical limitations. The conclusions have implications for the application of simulation technologies in other highly complex heritage buildings.

    The Adaptation of Modern Housing Heritage: Authenticity and Integrity in the Case of Cité Modèle

    [EN] The post-war social housing estate, Cité Modèle (Model City) in Laeken-Brussel (BE) was designed with CIAM principles in 1950s as a high-rise modern residential district where different types of dwellings integrated with car-free zones, wide green areas and various social facilities. Today it is an exceptional urban site in the history of modern architecture in Belgium. However, physical deterioration and socio-economic vulnerability necessitated the adaptation of the settlement in 2005, leading to the preparation of a masterplan which included a twelve-year of rehabilitation programme. Different types of interventions, both prior to this masterplan and in accordance with it, have led to changes in different attributes of this living heritage site. This paper aims to discuss the impacts of various conservation and adaptation strategies on the authenticity and integrity of the modern housing heritage, while considering expanding and questioning their definitions. The methodology includes literature review, field surveys, case study analyses, and comparative tabular evaluations to explore the dimensions of authenticity and integrity in modern housing heritage. The research on this case study has the potential to address a notable question in the literature on both architectural conservation and design based on the dialogue between continuity and change, and the re-interpretation of authenticity and integrity regarding a living modern heritage site.

    Modelling for uncertainty in HBIM processes

    [EN] The application of HBIM for the information management of historical buildings is often hindered by the presence of uncertainty due to limited geometric information and documentation at the time of modelling; controlling and organising this level of uncertainty, in view of future developments, becomes paramount. This paper presents an HBIM workflow to tackle uncertainty by capitalising on parametric modelling and 4D modelling. Parametric modelling is used as a dynamic tool that allows for an easy and quick update of the model when new data become available, while 4D modelling is used for disassembling the building backwards, establishing temporal relationships among building elements and organising them in successive phases, when uncertainty concerns the historical development of building elements and architectural interventions. The workflow was applied to a building of industrial archaeology in southern Italy, the De Simone factory, which is abandoned and in a poor state of conservation, but represents a valuable historical testimony due to its rich stratification resulting from significant physical and functional transformations over time. This application shows that structuring the data implementation process to accommodate the available information and its future integration, through the use of parametric and 4D modelling, can be very efficient to support documentation, conservation and enhancement activities on built heritage.     Leveraging deep learning segmentation techniques and connected component analysis to automate high-level cost estimates of facade retrofits using 2D images

    [EN] Deep learning semantic segmentation techniques applied to 2D facade images hold a great promise in several domains that go far beyond model generation, mainly if the data used are front-parallel or orthonormal photographs. However, effective applications in the field of built heritage have not been adequately explored, largely due to the absence of multidisciplinary teams that include architecture professionals as early as the dataset creation stage. The aim of this research is to introduce a holistic view in order to demonstrate the practical usefulness of state-of-the-art segmentation models to automate high-level cost estimates of urbanscale residential building facade rehabilitations when combined with a connected component analysis. To achieve this, a scalable bottom-up approach is formulated in five simple phases, encompassing both data science and architecture expertise. This strategy seeks to improve the accuracy of analyses at early stages when limited information on constructions is available and there is a significant cost uncertainty, and therefore to optimise the strategies used by construction stakeholders involved in economic feasibility studiesand decision-making processes.

    Analysis of structure and function of natural air-conditioning elements in the traditional context of Bandar-Lengeh

    [EN] Bandar-Lengeh features a stable pattern in the local architecture of South Iran, including two operative natural air-conditioning elements: Moshabak and Wind catchers. Since there are quantitative studies on these stable elements, this study aims to qualitatively analyze the structure and function of these local elements in Bandar-lengeh. In the first stage, information is obtained from the library, valid resources, and formal documents. Subsequently, active observation is conducted at the presumed location to collect, analyze, and extract natural air-conditioning elements (Wind catchers and Moshabak) from 273 buildings aged between 40 and 70. Additionally, in the third stage, the effect of temperature was observed by combining Wind catchers and Moshabak and placing them in various locations. Consequently, after evaluating and examining, the results indicate that every architectural element effectively met the residents needs for natural air-conditioning.

    [EN] Architectural heritage is one of the best testaments to the history of civilizations, embodying multidisciplinary values that should be shared through diverse cultural offerings. To achieve this, it is crucial to select engaging themes and develop museological materials that enhance understanding and appreciation of such sites. Equally important is leveraging modern dissemination technologies to reach diverse audiences effectively. The Falun Hall of the Yonghe Temple in Beijing exemplifies this approach. By analyzing its architectural elements, materials, and decorations, specific content can be created to enrich visitors experiences while promoting appreciation, dissemination, and conservation. The growth of global cultural tourism underscores the importance of sustainable practices that add touristic value, educate visitors, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) without compromising heritage integrity. Virtual Reality (VR) offers transformative opportunities for heritage preservation. Digital models of historicalbuildings ensure their preservation for future generations, facilitating global access and overcoming physical barriers. Additionally, branding and commercial products tied to such monuments can enhance their tourist appeal and support conservation efforts. This study emphasizes the potential of these strategies in fostering sustainable cultural tourism and preserving architectural heritage.

    Urban mining potential in demolition and design for innovative material reuse within a circular model

    [EN] A significant Soviet-era building from the 1970s in Moscow was demolished in 2019 after being excluded from the heritage list and left abandoned for an extended period. Constructed with bricks, precast slab panels, and a steel roof, the building underwent rapid destruction by machinery. The metals were sent to a recycling facility, while the concrete-brick mixture was transported to a dumping site, where it was partially stored and landfilled. The demolition process was monitored daily and documented through photographs, forming the initial phase of the current research. This research focused on creating an urban mining strategy to enhance the circularity of materials within an innovative architectural design. Detailed observations were made regarding the unit types and bonding style, the characteristics of the precast panels and jointing technique, the materials and fabrication of the trusses. This information was used to identify potential endof-life applications for the materials within a circular model from around the world. The research identified a strategy that prioritized deconstruction and reuse, which included cutting and reshaping walls into new load-bearing blocks, slicing slab panels and reassembling them into perforated facades, and converting the trusses into cross-braced columns. Using 3D modelling, each stage of the proposed scenario including the state of the components and their transformation into new architectural materials was digitally visualized. Additionally, the necessary tools and processes for this transformation in a real-world context were determined. Finally, the innovative architectural appearance created from these repurposed materials, showcasing their rich composition and textures, was presented. The benefits of the proposed management strategy were highlighted, emphasizing the intrinsic and architectural value of the materials, as well as their positive environmental and social aspect.

He is director of the Senseable City Lab at MIT and founding partner of the architecture firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associates (Turin, New York and London). He is curator of the XIX International Architecture Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2025.
