    Exploring the language-culture-technology nexus through the lens of EFL Teachers in Chile

    [EN] Modern Foreign Language (FL) instruction has recently called out for a language-culture-technology (LCT) nexus that could engage learners in transnational dialogue and interaction. This study focuses on the views of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Chile and their classroom practices in relation to an LCT nexus. The Chilean EFL context was chosen due to a lack of integration between language, culture and technology in the national EFL curriculum that informs classroom practice. The study collected data through an online questionnaire (N=128 participants) that was distributed nationwide. Questionnaire results showed that although teachers recognised the significance of intercultural interaction and identity reflection, they struggled to incorporate these into their teaching practices, especially when using Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Furthermore, the integration of language and culture as reported by teachers was often superficial, and technology was primarily used to support writing in English. The study suggests the need for a stronger theoretical and pedagogical basis for the national EFL curriculum in Chile and professional development to support a language-culture-technology nexus in FL classrooms.

    Using TED talks to improve engineering students' oral skills

    [EN] This paper deals with the training of undergraduate engineering students and is interdisciplinary in nature. It brings together three distinct aspects of scientific dissemination: the content of an engineering degree; the oral transmission of this content following the effective TED talks model; and the use English as a medium of scientific transmission. The paper highlights the need for trainee Spanish engineers to be able to communicate their work to the public through oral presentations that are brief and entertaining, yet scientifically rigorous. The core of the study consists of an analysis of a particular TED talk that is relevant for a variety of engineering degrees. We conclude that while it is necessary for Spanish engineers to receive specific training at a professional level in oral communication skills, there is a close relationship between the mode of transmission and the subject specific content to be transmitted that needs to be considered carefully. Developing a mastery of English is important, but essential communication skills are the most crucial aspect, regardless of the language of communication.

    Quantifying the impact of ASR-based instruction: What does the iSpraak platform learner data show?

    [EN] Computer-assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) tools have become increasingly dependent on Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology to provide automated corrective pronunciation feedback to learners. The extent to which ASR-based tools measurably improve second language (L2) pronunciation is of great interest to language educators globally, and Computer-assisted Language Learning (CALL) researchers. Studies to date have largely been conducted by research practitioners with small-to-medium sized samples at single institutions. The findings and conclusions drawn from such small-scale data collection might be significantly bolstered by analysing the vast stores of learner data from large CAPT platforms. This study is informed by a sizable eight-year dataset from iSpraak, an open-source pronunciation tool designed to model and evaluate L2 speech. Quantitative analysis of anonymised learner interactions with this application reveals significant gains in intelligibility measures across multiple languages. Results also suggest that the extent of ASR s ability to improve learner pronunciation may be L2 dependent.

    [EN] This literature review delves into the applications and implications of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-driven chatbot, in educational settings. As technology continues to permeate the field of education, ongoing debates persist regarding the potential impact on learners' critical thinking skills and the evolving role of educators. Instead of resisting such technologies, this review contends that discussions should focus on strategies to optimize their use within education. By conducting a comprehensive document analysis, this study hones in on the utilization of ChatGPT, harnessing its natural language processing technology, within the realm of foreign language acquisition. The findings of this review indicate that ChatGPT can significantly enhance foreign language writing skills and conversational capabilities, offering tailored language support. Through personalized feedback and guidance, ChatGPT has the potential to facilitate more effective knowledge acquisition and create practical and interactive learning experiences, particularly in applied sciences. It is important to note, however, that ongoing debates surrounding accuracy, currency, and reliability should be taken into account. Thus, the study emphasizes the cautious and responsible use of ChatGPT within educational contexts. To summarize, when used responsibly, AI chatbots such as ChatGPT can enrich language learning processes and provide practical and active learning experiences, ultimately fostering more effective knowledge acquisition. Therefore, this review underscores the significance of bolstering the tech-literacy of both educators and students, integrating novel technological skills into educational curricula, and investing in comprehensive training on technology usage for students. By embracing these approaches, educational institutions can harness the full potential of AI chatbots in enhancing the learning journey.

    Bilingual Viewer: A bilingual text generation tool

    [EN] This article describes the website BilingualViewer.com; it discusses the technologies used to build it and the engineering challenges that were encountered. BilingualViewer.Com is an open and free application that uses web technologies to create Bilingual versions of articles and books. The website can be saved onto the homepage of a smartphone and used like an App (for reading and converting newspaper articles on the fly), in addition to being opened on a computer's browser to process intensive tasks such as whole book translations. The website will henceforth be referred to as the app. Bilingual text refers here to a piece of writing where sentences in two different languages are presented sequentially, one sentence in the language to be learned followed by the user's primary language. Bilingual texts are particularly useful for students who rely heavily on dictionaries when reading books and newspaper articles.The app helps to create bilingual texts from almost any electronic content. A key feature from a copyright point of view is that the content is generated and stored locally on the device (unless added to an online library). Where a subscription is required to access newspaper content, the app generates a bilingual text article and stores it locally, so that the restricted content does not leave the device (i.e., it does not appear in any cloud server other than Google or Apple translation servers). There is a large features list including switching on and off languages, getting the device to read out loud, saving a list of items on the device along with the currently read position, sending content to an eBook, merging articles and more. A library of pre-translated books is provided in the app with the option of augmenting this with the user s own on-line content.
