Our research group has carried out three clinical trials in Argentina, which were the first ones in Latin America. The first two studies took place in 2016 and 2017, both in the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (HIBA) with five adult subjects and a duration of 36 hours. The second trial evaluated the performance of a novel closed-loop controlalgorithm (without meal insulin boluses), called ARG Automatic Regulation of Glucose) and based on switched LQG control and a safety layer called SAFE (Safery Auxiliary Feedback Element), developed by researchers of our team. More recently and during COVID-19 pandemic, the first ambulatory trials took place, which were carried out in 2021 in a hotel with 5 subjects during 6 days. Additionally, for this third trial, the use of the artificial pancreas platform developed by the UNLP, called InsuMate, was incorporated. This platform connects a smartphone with the insulin pump and glucose monitor, houses the control algorithm, andallows the remote monitoring of multiple users. The results suggest that the ambulatory use of the ARG algorithm is feasible, safe and effective, compared to the usual reatment. In addition, the InsuMate platform was intuitive and easy to use for both healthcare staff and participants of the trial, achieving an over 95% of time in closed-loop.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Aplicaciones de control predictivo en plantas solares CCP(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) Gallego Len, Antonio J.; Sánchez del Pozo, Adolfo J.; Camacho, Eduardo F.; European Commission; Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure plc[EN] One of the main methods to improve the efficiency in the use of solar energy is the application of advanced control techniques.This work develops a state of the art of predictive control applications to small and large scale solar trough plants. Two realapplications are presented. The first one is designed to the old ACUREX experimental plant at the Plataforma solar de Almer ??a(PSA). The second one is the design of a model predictive controller for large scale commercial CCP plants that is installed in 13Spanish plants as well as in the Mojave solar trough plants in California (USA). C.; Normey-Rico, Julio E.; Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brasil[EN] This work proposes a predictive control technique to be applied in fast processes using online optimization. Currently, advanced controllers are increasingly needed in industry at low levels of automation, which are associated with sampling times on the order of milliseconds or microseconds. The quadratic programming resulting from the control problem of a predictive control algorithm with constraints, such as Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC), which is one of the most used alternatives in industry, can be considered computationally expensive and becomes a limitation to embed and use the DMC in plants with fast sample rates. This paper proposes a solution to this problem based on the dual accelerated gradient projection method, which has shorter convergence times than other solutions in the literature based on predictive control strategies with online optimization. The proposed approach was tested in simulation to control a semiactive automotive suspension system, which has fast dynamics, showing that satisfactory results can be obtained with a sampling time of 5 ms. Moreover, the proposed control was implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and the resulting quadratic programming problem was calculated in microseconds, which allows the use of the DMC to control very fast processes.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Un esquema de decisiones para intervenciones adaptativas comportamentales de actividad física basado en control predictivo por modelo híbrido: ilustración con Just Walk(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) Cevallos, Daniel; Martín, César A.; El Mistiri, Mohamed; Rivera, Daniel E.; Hekler, Eric; National Science Foundation, EEUU; National Institutes of Health, EEUU[EN] Physical inactivity is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Many current physical activity behavioral interventions have shown limited success addressing the problem from a long-term perspective that includes maintenance. This paper proposes the design of a decision algorithm for a mobile and wireless health (mHealth) adaptive intervention that is based on control engineering concepts. The design process relies on a behavioral dynamical model based on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), with a controller formulation based on hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) being used to implement the decision scheme. The discrete and logical features of HMPC coincide naturally with the categorical nature of the intervention components and the logical decisions that are particular to an intervention for physical activity. The intervention incorporates an online controller reconfiguration mode that applies changes in the penalty weights to accomplish the transition between the behavioral initiation and maintenance training stages. Controller performance is illustrated using an ARX model estimated from system identification data of a representative participant for Just Walk, a physical activity intervention designed on the basis of control systems principles.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Gemelos Digitales en la Industria de Procesos(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) de Prada, César; Galán-Casado, Santos; Pitarch, José Luis; Sarabia, Daniel; Galán, Anibal; Gutiérrez, Gloria; Departamento de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeroespacial y Diseño Industrial; Instituto Universitario de Automática e Informática Industrial; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] Digital Twins are virtual plants with an architecture and functionalities that make them actual useful tools for improving many aspects related to process operation, from its control to optimization. Nevertheless, there are several open problems that demand additional research before Digital Twins can be used in real-time as useful tools in decision making. Among them we can cite those related to model updating in real-time and the explicit consideration of uncertainty in models and processes. However, for a proper operation, microgrid control is a fundamental aspect, which is why this paper proposes, in a didactic way, a simple implementation strategy for those cases where the mathematical description or model of the system is not available. The paper s contribution consists of the proposal of a detailed strategy for the design of the hierarchical control for voltage source converters based on fuzzy mathematics, which considers the microgrid operation as islanded or connected to the main network. The proposed implementation and the analysis of the obtained results show that the proposed hierarchical control strategy has satisfactory performance. Furthermore, this design structure is scalable, robust, applicable in linear or nonlinear systems, and rapidly implementable in physical systems.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Control robusto del pH en un fotobiorreactor raceway(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) Hoyo Sánchez, Ángeles; Guzmán Sánchez, José Luis; Moreno Úbeda, José Carlos; Baños Torrico, Alfonso; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] This work presents a first approach to the robust control of pH in a raceway photobioreactor for the cultivation of microalgae. In this type of process, pH is the most critical variable to control, having a direct relationship with the productivity of the system. The dynamics of the pH has a strongly non-linear character, being affected by numerous factors such as the contribution of CO2 to the culture medium or the performance of photosynthesis by the microalgae. This non-linearity generates a great source of uncertainty in the process even when the system is controlled around the desired operating point. Therefore, in this article we have proceeded to model the system with parametric uncertainty covering the typical working ranges of pH, and later a robust controller with QFT is designed to achieve certain robust performance and stability requirements. The resulting control algorithm has been evaluated in simulation and in real tests against different working conditions and at different operating points, obtaining satisfactory results.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Un neuro-controlador estable en tiempo real para reducir el consumo de energía en una bomba centrífuga ante perturbaciones(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) Yudho-Montes de Oca, Eduardo; Maya-Rodríguez, Mario Cesar; Tolentino-Eslava, René; Lozano-Hernández, Yair[EN] In this paper, the application of an on-line tuning method based on neural networks for a PID controller was proposed to regulate the flow in a centrifugal pump. The implementation of a modified back-propagation algorithm stable in the sense of input-to-state stability was carried out to update the weights of a neural network. The energy consumed by the pump to maintain a certain flow in the pipeline of an experimental station as an indicator to assess the efficiency of the controller was chosen. Different experimental tests to show the performance of the proposed controller under different conditions were carried out such as non-disturbance, constant disturbances and time-dependent disturbances. A proportional valve was implemented to generate the disturbances in the system. The controller was compared with a classical PID controller and an on-line tuning method based on neural networks for a PID controller without back-propagation modification. The results showed that the on-line tuning method based on neural networks with a stable learning algorithm produced a lower energy consumption in the centrifugal pump.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Producción, control y gestión distribuida de energía: una revisión de terminología y enfoques habituales(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2022-06-29) Ramos-Teodoro, Jerónimo; Rodríguez, Francisco; Agencia Estatal de Investigación[EN] Over the last few decades, lines of research related to distributed generation and energy management have given rise to the introduction of novel terms referring to continuous production systems and their optimal design, scheduling, control, or modelling. Although some of those ones emerged in the field of power grid analysis and operation, and their later extension towards other energy sources, all they share some common features and hence can be studied from a holistic perspective. In this paper, a review of different ongoing approaches is performed, aimed at offering a global and straightforward view of the stateof-the-art concepts to readers. In order to do so, the most remarkable elements that can be found in publications employed terminology, context, research purpose, mathematical treatment, optimisation strategies, and tools are first defined and characteri-sed. This helped to analyse and classify, in tabular form, some articles selected according to the impact of the journal, their number of cites and the use of certain terms that emerged in the ambit of distributed energy sistems, in order to find possible research gaps in this topic in relation the usual simulation, control, and optimisation techniques.
