Between "Silhouette d'une ville" and "Patriotisme": Analyzing those Conceptions in "La Construction des Villes" through the Lens of Georges de Montenach's "Pour le visage aimé de la patrie"

[EN] This paper delves into Charles-Édouard Jeanneret s inaugural urban study La Construction des Villes, exploring his pursuit of fostering citizens local patriotism . While Jeanneret, also known as young Le Corbusier, emphasises the importance of physical urban forms in generating this sentiment, the specific mechanism behind the emergence of local patriotism remains unclear in the manuscript. Our objective is to clarify the uniqueness and historical context of Jeanneret s thoughts on local patriotism by examining its ideological background, particularly the foundation for creating this sentiment. The key concept, the silhouette of a city , borrowed from Georges de Montenach, lacks specific examples or forms in Jeanneret s work. Jeanneret argues that visual clarity and its beauty form the basis for local patriotism. This abstraction, excluding the specificity of the place and translating symbolism into visual clarity, foreshadows Le Corbusier s later modernist ideas. Unlike previous interpretations of inhabitants visual experiences, aligned with pre-modern German-speaking spatial theory, Jeanneret s description of the silhouette of a city externalises the viewing subject, applying a limited scope of the landscape aligning with contemporary French-speaking discussions. The resulting collective consciousness, shared by external observers perceiving a clear silhouette of a city, is conceptualized as local patriotism.

[EN] On the occasion of the itinerant exhibition "LC150+. The RT+Q collection of models of projects and works by Le Corbusier", the meeting "Five brief reflections on the work of Le Corbusier" took place. Five scholars of the work of the French-Swiss master were invited to present papers. This book brings together the texts written for the occasion by Juan Calatrava, Pere Fuertes, Josefina González Cubero, Alejando Lapunzina and Jorge Torres Cueco, accompanied by introductory texts by Brigitte Bouvier (Fondation Le Corbusier), Rene Tan (promoter of the exhibition) and Alejandro Lapunzina (organiser of the exhibition at the ETSAV and editor of this volume).

Tim Benton. The Painter Le Corbusier: Eileen Gray's Villa E 1027 and Le Cabanon

[EN] Coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of Le Corbusier's death, Tim Benton wrote Le Corbusier, peintre à Cap-Martin (Éditions du Patrimonie, 2015), which was republished six years later, also in French. On this villa he has also published Cap Moderne. Eileen Gray and Le Corbusier. Modernisme by the Sea (2022) and has contributed to the anthology E1027. Restoring a House by the Sea (2022). With this new English version he completes the dissemination of this valuable book, which focuses on a critical reconsideration of the figure of Le Corbusier.

[EN] When we think of Jean-Louis Cohen's career, the first thing that comes to mind is the brilliant scientific career he has followed, from architecture schools to French universities, to the Institute of Fine Arts in New York, and now to the Collège de France as a visiting professor from 2014 to 2021. Paradoxically, the many books he produced throughout his career, and the exhibitions that accompanied them, seem to obscure the very essence of his work: his commitment as an intellectual and scientist in the second half of the twentieth century and the first quarter of the twenty-first.

Cité Frugès. Tiempo en imágenes, imágenes en el tiempo

[EN] This text accompanies the photographic essay on the Cité de Frugès, a district of Pessac near Bordeaux, designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanaret in 1924. The presentation of these contemporary photographs justifies on the one hand a review -on the occasion of the centenary- of the controversial history of this initiatory project of the architect's career, which allowed him to put into practice on a large scale his ideas on standardization, industrialization and typification of affordable housing and its interrelation with urban space. On the other hand, already in photographic terms, it establishes a comparative reading with the photographs of the moment of its construction and the intentionality that these had under the operative and discursive prism of Le Corbusier. And, finally, it points to the value that contemporary photography has, as an aesthetic categorization, to redefine the interpretation of the real from the spatial-temporal coordinates.

Le Corbusier's Secret Architectural Language

[EN] This essay analyzes Le Corbusier s most important architecture and uncovers in them a previously untranslated private and personal language with extended narratives. It offers a fresh look at a number of specific compositions by finding deep resonances in his sketches, writings, private correspondence, and others recorded memories. The main representational devices used in these compositions are faces and phalluses; however, geometric objects and other representative elements comprise their own lexicon and are interwoven throughout. These compositions follow themes of wit, virility, revenge, self-memorialization, and grief. It appears that LC intentionally paired the profound and the puerile in certain works of architecture, which may have made them complete for him. This may have been directly modeled on the writing of François Rabelais, whom he deeply admired. One central and oft-repeated self-portrait construct advanced here is the two-eye diagram , which LC created to explain how the matter-spirit dialectic played a fundamental role in portraying himself and expressing his world view and creative process.

Modernist Relations France-England: Le Corbusier, Clive Entwistle and exhibition projects

[EN] In the context of the Modern Movement and influenced by Le Corbusier's design principles, this text explores the significance of the Swiss master's exhibition pavilion and fair projects. These projects, distinct from conventional architectural timelines, serve as evidence of the ideas shaping the project process, reflecting a compression of time and manifestos in physical form. Focusing on collaborations with English architect Clive Entwistle for exhibitions in England, particularly the 1939 Ideal Home Exhibition, the article delves into Le Corbusier's innovative designs, including a Ville Radieuse housing unit, a prefabricated house, and a luxury house. The text highlights Le Corbusier's strategic use of exhibition architecture as a platform to communicate his principles and theories, showcasing his work as a "laboratory" of projects. The article emphasizes the intertextuality of Le Corbusier's work, where ideas transcend projects, contexts, and meanings, fostering a dynamic relationship between theoretical reflections and practical experiences in pavilion and exhibition designs.

Le Corbusier and Geometry in Practice. A Study of Two Singular Examples

[EN] Le Corbusier's conviction that geometry, and more generally mathematics, carry aesthetic, functional and even moral values is well known; the use of the famous regulating lines in some of his projects and especially his work on the Modulor are undoubtedly the most obvious indications of this position. For Le Corbusier, geometry is an ideal, and several authors have noted the Platonic or Pythagorean character of his vision of mathematics. In this study, we will question in which ways geometric or mathematical principles or methods are implemented in the process of the specification of architectural forms for their construction. This study focuses on cases which present relatively complex geometric aspects, more precisely two projects which contain particular geometric surfaces, with negative curvature: the main chamber of the Palace of the Assembly of Chandigarh and the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp. In the first case, the geometric regularity is apparent, in the second a very pronounced irregularity is deliberately sought. The methods used in both cases share points in common, but also present differences that are worth highlighting.

Le Corbusier: "Je pense, du pays de Palladio"

[EN] On 11 September 1922, Le Corbusier goes on a journey to Veneto, during which he visited the Palladian architecture, and developed an Album which was left unpublished until it came to light in 1996, edited by Stanislaus von Moos. Its importance lies in the significant close observation of Palladian works pursuing the never-ending values of Architecture Palazzo Chiericati, La Rotonda, Basilica Palladiana, Palazzo Barbarano, Villa Loschi Zileri, and of an unknown villa, eventually found on Mount Berico. The drawings in the Album implement accurate choices, the typological terms such as vestibule, portique, attique, cour and spaces like the tetrastyle atrium and the loggias are connected to, in the aim to determine forms, volumes, architectural devices, interpreted through the sketches. The detailed drawings assess a range of particular elements to be later fitted in or denied, defining the architectural project through the assemblage. From various assumptions it seems Le Corbusier was looking for types and "standarts" of Purism, through the recherche des invariants, as asserted by the notes and by the photo postcards of Palladian windows. The text investigates unpublished materials, offering a new interpretation both of journey to Veneto and of the texts of his French-Swiss Master.

Introduction à Vers une architecture. 2ème partie

[EN] The decision to publish, in this special issue of the journal LC. Revue de recherches sur Le Corbusier devoted to Vers une architecture, a French version of the monumental English-language introduction that Jean-Louis Cohen gave to the new American translation of Vers une architecture, published in 2007, was taken with him in July 2023. His tragic death on 8 August prevented him, by a matter of days, from re-reading this unpublished text in French, of which he had kept only a French draft; in agreement with him, only a few minor changes and updates, made necessary after the fifteen years that have passed since its publication, have been made. We are publishing this text as a tribute to the great historian of modern architecture who has done so much to promote knowledge of Le Corbusier. The first part of this introduction was published in the previous issue of the journal LC.
