    UTILISATION OF FIELD BEANS BY GROWING RABBITS 1 - EFFECTS OF SUPPLEMENTATIONS AIMED AT IMPROVING THE SULFUR AMINO ACID SUPPLY

    [EN] One hundred New Zealand White rabbits distributed into five dietary groups were fattened between 35 and 77 days in indivicfuál ca9es. The diets were SOJ (soybean control), FEV (26.5 % f1eld beans), FEVM (FEV diet supplemented with di methionine), F'EVF (FEV diet supplemented with field beans up to a total of 37 %) and FEVT (FEV diet supplemented with sunflower cake) provided ad libitum. The mean protein content was 14.5 % in the SOJ, FEV and FEVM diets and 16.3 % in the FEVF and FEVT diets. The digestible energy content varied little between diets (2256 to 2324 kcal DE/ kg). The fibre content of each diet was 14.5 %. Apparent digestibility of dry matter was comparable in all five diets (58.9 to 60.3 %). Apparent digestibilitv of crude proteins was lower in the FEVF diet (68.2 %) tlían in the SOJ (70.8 %), FEVM (70.0 %) and FEVT (73.3 %) diets. The daily growth rate of rabbits fed the FEV diet (38.9 g / d) was lower than that in the other groups (40. 7 to 44.5 g / d) but their feed conversion ratio was similar. The diet did not affect dressing percentage (mean : 57 %) or the relativa weiQht of the skin and of the full gastrointestinal tract. However, 1t did affect several carcass composition parameters : the muscle to bone ratio was highest under the FEVM diet (5.29) and lowest under the FEV diet (4.34) and relativa liver we1ght was lowest under FEVT and highest under FEVF. Finally, there was no difference in the sensory guality of meat between SOJ and FEVF diets. In conclusion, f1eld beans were a good source of proteins for rabbits that could totally replace soybean meal but did require supplementation with sulfur amino acids (d/methionine or another plant source) in order for performance to be adequate.

    [EN] The data were collected on sixty New Zealand White (NZW) and sixty Californian (CAL) weaned male rabbits used to investigate the magnitude and direction of genetic environmental mteraction. Ralf the rabbits in each group was fed ad libitum on commercial pelleted ration containing Zinc bacitracin (ZIN) and the other half on ration containing Flavomycin (FLA). F'or all rabbits, daily gain, daily feed intal<e and feed conversion rate were calculated for entire interval from weaning (O) to final weight (8 weeks) and sub-intervals (0-4 and 4-8 weeks). Half tlie rabbits in each breed-i:>romoter type group (n = 15) were slaughtered after 8 weeks from weaning and evaluated for slaughter and carcass cut-out traits. Significant interactions of bread with promoter ~pe were delected fo carcass percentage and for the proport1on of the carcass weight occurring in the fore and hind limbs (P<0.05). The knowledge of such interaction may lead to recommend the specific use of FLA for NZW rabbits and the specific use of ZIN for CAL. Besides, the absence of interaction of bread with promoter type in terms of live performance and yield of non-limb carcass components lead to conclude that while the tastar gainer and more efficient feed converter bread (NZW) under one promoter type treatment was also the best under the other promoter type. NZW tended (P<0.01) under both types of promoters to have more proportion o( the carcass weight occurring in the head and less proportion in the trunk.

    EUROPEAN REFERENCE METHOD FOR IN VIVO DETERMINATION OF DIET DIGESTIBILITY IN RABBITS

    [EN] This paper describes a standardized method for in vivo determination of total digestibility in rabbits. This method was working out within the European Group on Rabbit Nutrition (EGRAN) which involves six laboratories from five countries (Belgium, France, ltaly, Portugal and Spain). The aim of the group was to propose a method at once reliable, quick and- simple. This new rnethod can be regarded as a baseline for calibrating individual laboratory procedures. The method is based on 7 to 8 weeks old rabbits caged individually and fed ad libitum. The pre-experimental period lasts 7 days and the collection period only 4 days. For either feed and faeces, standardized conditions of sampling and drying are described.

    EFFECT OF SIRE STRAIN, FEEDING, AGE AND SEX ON RABBIT CARCASS

    [EN] The effect of sire strain, feeding plan, slaughter age and sex on the carcass g~~lity were studied on 120 crossbred rabbits (White Giant (vvG), Heavy Grimaud Fréres (HGF), Light Grimaud Fréres (LGF) with New Zealand White does]. Two feeding plans were used : plan H consisting of a high energy diet (10.42 MJ DE/kg ; 12.14 % DP) from weaning to slaughtering (75 days or 90 days of age) ; plan LH consistíng of a low energy d1et (9.85 MJ DE/kg ; 11.51 % DP) until 55 aays, and a higfl energy diet up to 75 or 90 days. The sire strain affected growth performance and carcass traits ; the best results were obtained with progeny of WG at 90d. The sex effect was not significant and the feeding plan did not influence growth performance and carcass quálity, because of the abiírty of the rabbit to adjust lts feed intake fo the energetic value of the diet. Delaying slaughter age, most of the traits improved, allowing heavy carcasses with very good qualitative characteristics to be obtained : Carcass yieltl 62.7 %, drip loss 2.7 %, reference carcass 1384 g, perirenal fat 2.1 % r.c., muscle/bone ratio of hing leg 7.6.

    EFFECT OF ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF YEAST ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) ON DIGESTIBILITY AND GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF RABBITS FED DIETS OF DIFFERENT FIBRE CONTENT

    [EN] Thirty two laboratory strain New Zealand White rabbits aged about 6 weeks were divided into 4 equal groups. Rabbits were fed diets of 9. 73 % (/DM) fibre in group 1 and 2, and 12.86 % fibre in group 3 and 4. Yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) ata rate of 5 x 1oa cells /animal /day was given orally to group 1 and 3. Dry matter intake was significantly (P<0.01) higher in the rabbits given high fibra diet but tlie digestibility coefficients of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, nitrogen free extract and feed conversion efficiency were significantly better in the animals given low fibre diet. Adminisfration of yeast culture had no effect on weight gain or digestibility of nutrients.

    EFFECT OF DILUENT AND STORAGE TIME OF RABBIT SEMEN ON THE FERTILITY OF DOES REARED UNDER TWO DIFFERENT LIGHTING SCHEDULES

    [EN] Using a 3-factorial design, the effect of two commercial diluents (IMV vs Minitüb), two storage times (fresh vs 6h storage at ambient temperature) and a lighting schedule was stud1ed on artificial inseminated does. During a 1 O month experimental period 140 (nulliparous and multiparous) does were randomlr divided in two production groups and submitted to a 16h :8hD continuously lighting schedule or to a 10hL:14hD schedule. In order to synchronize the oestrus, the lighting period was suddenly increased till 16hL from 5 days before the insemination (alternative lighting). Both production groups were inseminated every a weeks with an interval of 3 weeks between them. In total 988 inseminations were performed with an average conception rate (CR) of 56.5 %. The CR with both diluents was comparable, 55.6 % and 57.5 % for IMV and Minitüb, respectively. There was no decrease observad in CR when semen was stored during 6 hours into the insemination straws. CR was respectively 56.6 % (fresh semen) and 56.4 % (stored semen). The difference in CR between lighting schedules was small (2 %) and also not significant. Differences in litter size were not significant and could not be relatad to the treatments used. The overall low CR (56.5 %) is partly explained by the physiological status (vulva colour) of the does, indicating that 67 % of the does were not receptiva (white or rose vulva) at the 1 st insemination. However, on does showing a red or purple vulva a CR of 70.3 % was obtained. Otter size of does inseminated with white vulva was significantly (P<0.001) lower, and amounted only 3.9 (nulliparous does) and 5.S (multiparous does) live youngs instead of 6.9 (nulliparous, rose vulva) to 8.9 (multiparous, purple vulva) when inseminated with coloured vulva.

    ALBINO RABBITS CAN SUFFER FROM MEGACOLON-SYNDROME WHEN THEY ARE HOMOZYGOUS FOR THE ENGLISH SPOT"" GENE (EnEn)""

    [EN] Segregation patterns, reproduction rate, mortality, fattening performance and gut parameters of albino (ce) ralfüits heterozygous (Enen) or homozygous (EnEn) for the English Spot gene have been investigated to test the hypothesis whether albinos can suffer from MegacolonSyndrome, which is a characteristic predisposition of EnEn spotted animals. Whereas the weight of the gut (brutto) of ce Enen - animals reached 8.5 ± O. 7 % of live weight at slaughter and 17 .2 ± 1.6 % of the carcass weight, ce-En En animals exhibited a relativa gut weight of 16.5 ± 6.5 % and 37.0 ± 17.4 % respectively. rn addit1on to these findings one cc-EnEn breeder buck suffered chronically from MegacolonSyndrome. Thus there is evidence that the En - gene segregating in ce - genotypes may induce enteric probfems in albinotic stocks.
