Universos cromáticos para el patrimonio de Chile

[ES] Para el diseño de dos centros de interpretación en la Región de O´Higgins, Chile, destinados a la puesta en valor de sitios patrimoniales, se encargan estudios de color y la creación de paletas cromáticas con el objetivo de dar coherencia interna e identidad al proyecto general. Durante la investigación preliminar de cada proyecto, de enfoque cualitativo, un equipo interdisciplinario recogió información en terreno mediante entrevistas, relevamientos cromáticos, fotografías y otros. Se planteó ampliar el concepto paleta de color hacia un orden espacial conceptualmente coherente con el proyecto de arquitectura, llamado “universo cromático”, cuyo objetivo fue facilitar el uso de los colores durante el proceso de diseño. La utilización de estos universos fue disímil en ambos proyectos, sin embargo, se logró dar coherencia e identidad a ambos y también orientar el uso de sus colores. Learning from the Farnsworth. Exploratory photomontages and visual criticism

[EN] In the teaching framework of the second year of Architecture at the University of Zaragoza, we propose a transversal exercise between the areas of Graphic Expression (Integrated Workshop 1) and Architectural Design (Projects 1). In order to work on an extension project of Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth house, graphically developed in Integrated Workshop 1, we began with an exercise of visual exploration –through photomontage and collage– to critically reconsider the mythical nature of this glass urn and its potential operational strategies. Reviewing the extraordinary and suggestive results achieved by the students, this text aims to briefly analyse and revalue even more this graphic technique of architectural representation in a teaching context and to critically and theoretically reassess the circumspect identity of modern architectural icons.

Representation of the soundscape in the architectural design process

[EN] Insight is one of the main phases of the architectural design process. Throughout history, various methods have been used to address this crucial phase. In this study, a soundscape is proposed as a generator of project ideas. To explore this new approach, a teaching experience was carried out with architecture students and the results were analysed in terms of satisfaction and the designs that were generated. The results show the educational capacity of the method, the impact on subjective assessment of phenomena in the architectural environment and its applicability, regardless of the previous musical level of the students.

Virtual reconstruction of the QH31, QH32, QH33 & QH34 hypogea’s outer courtyards construction sequence

[EN] 4000 years ago, during XII Dynasty, Elephantine’s Governors were buried in the Qubbet El-Hawa necropoli. The set made up for the QH32, QH31, QH33 and QH34 hypogea stands in this period out. The goal is to contribute with a virtual hypothesis of the outer set construction sequence, an enclosure which include the front courtyards of every one of the successively excavated tombs as a part of a bigger funerary set.

Drawings of Juan de Madrazo’s architectural offer to design the first Evangelical Spanish Church in 1880

[EN] In the 19th century, there arises on the part of the Anglican Community the need to execute a church of new plant, after happening for different rents of places. Juan de Madrazo prestigious member of the Anglican church, receives the order of realizing a representative church concerning 1880. In this article there are analyzed the unpublished drawings of the original sketch realized by Madrazo for the accomplishment of the first Evangelical Spanish Church, located in Madrid. And after the death of this one, Enrique Repulles y Segarra will take again this project, which will study meticulously Madrazo’s offer. These drawings allow to analyze Madrazo’s rigorous study on the programmatical needs, and the way of projecting the building, as well as to know in major measure the architect as draftsman and his creative evolution from different preliminary sketches that will reflect the needs of program.

To touch the sky. The longing for verticality in the work of Teodoro de Anasagasti

[EN] Architect, builder, writer, professor, academic, critic and editor, Teodoro de Anasagasti pointed towards the sky as much as he could in his proposals and achievements. An inveterate traveller, his extensive graphic work also includes tectonic and topographical references that are united by their ascending condition. In the impeccable execution of his most elaborate projects, in the accurate synthesis of the moments recorded in his notebooks, or in the heartrending beauty of his graphic chronicle of the city of Madrid devastated by war, he experiments with particular insistence on developments in height. An indispensable compositional resource of artistic creation, the search for verticality proper to the architectural discipline reaches its most fertile and seductive expression in Anasagasti’s work.

Drawing and control. The work of Javier Carvajal for Loewe

[EN] In 1959 the renowned luxury firm Loewe decided to transform and renew its image and chose architect Javier Carvajal to accomplish the task. In facing the design of these stores, he found that the strategic equipment he had developed in the projects he had done until that moment, was here totally useless. Nonetheless, the architect dealt with the commission in a thorough definition process, with the same resolve of formal control he used in previous ones. Beyond the general plans of the stores, the interiors, furniture and details were drawn by his own hand, 1 to 1 scale most of the times. Constructive relations between elements and materials were established with total precision. Each and every joint, detail, attachment and screw was gathered up in a set of uncompromising drawings, pure graphic orders that composed a sort of virtual construction, born to avoid any error range.

Figuraciones del suburbio. Mapas comerciales y expansión metropolitana en el Gran Buenos Aires, 1940-1950

[ES] Acompañando la expansión y los procesos de producción de suelo urbano que atravesó el Gran Buenos Aires durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, se destaca la labor de un grupo de “agrimensores del suburbio” que trabajaron en el contexto de un creciente mercado inmobiliario. Este artículo presenta las cartografías de Máximo Randrup (1880-1954), las mismas llaman la atención sobre el creciente mercado para una cartografía urbana mercantil, a la vez que disparan interrogantes acerca de qué y cómo muestran la expansión, en contraste con lo que despliegan las cartografías oficiales.Las primeras aproximaciones en torno al tema dan cuenta de que se trata de imágenes que representan un territorio continuo y urbanizado, que suma trazados de loteos y proyectos que aún no se materializaban en esos años. Virtual reconstruction of Saraqustä

[ES] El texto describe la recreación virtual 3D de la ciudad islámica de Saraqustä (actual Zaragoza). Para su realización se han tomado como referencia los vestigios existentes, las hipótesis de diversos autores especializados y los modelos contemporáneos de otras ciudades. Las fases de trabajo incluyen un delineado completo en planta, un modelado 3D con la ayuda de herramientas paramétricas y un trabajo final de ambientación y renderizado. Entre los elementos a destacar se encuentran el trazado de la muralla islámica, el palacio de la Aljafería, la mezquita aljama, otras mezquitas menores y alminares y algunos edificios civiles. El trabajo establece una posible metodología para abordar la reconstrucción de ciudades históricas cuando existe una escasa documentación gráfica, y debe recurrirse a modelos comparativos e hipótesis científicamente fundamentadas.

Geometry at Valencian “Ciutat de les Arts i de les Ciències” buildings

[EN] The importance of the use of geometry in architecture design, and more specifically the use of geometric surfaces that shape the architectural space is this paper focus. The paper sets the value of the use of these geometric shapes defined as formal control element during the building designing stage helping at the same time to keep coherence within the structural behaviour, and a greater ease both in the execution as during its material construction A case-study of geometric formal analysis has been developed, the Valencian “Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències”, as a clear example of geometric shapes application in the current architecture. Analysis is mainly about shapes generation, but structural and constructive areas have been studied from the geometric standpoint.

Working with Scale Models: Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames in the Organic Design Competition, MoMA, 1941

[EN] This article looks at the background of the first exhibition given over to modern furniture design in America organized at the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. It becomes clear that the great majority of the designs awarded prizes in the competition prior to the exhibition were produced by young architects. This was because they were the only people who were up-to-date with modern trends emanating from the Bauhaus or Scandinavian design. Both the organizer, Eliot Noyes, and the prize-winners, Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames, became prominent after the Second World War as designers with outstanding professional careers. Finally, it is of interest to note the part played by prototypes and scale models in the processes of furniture design.

The representation of César Manrique’s architecture by axonometric sketches

[EN] This article summarizes the experience of using axonometric sketches as a tool for spatial analysis and its volumetric description, referring to the architecture of César Manrique in Lanzarote. The text confronts the suitability of this tool to refer to an architecture with a marked labyrinthine character, as opposed to the use of photographs. The text concludes by referring to the acceptance that these axonometric sketches have aroused on architects, researchers and the general public who visit Manrique’s works.

Behind the vestiges of the hieronymite order in the city of Zamora. Study and graphical restitution of the Monastery of San Jeronimo de Montamarta

[ES] Una de las mayores pérdidas del patrimonio artístico de la ciudad de Zamora ha sido la desaparición del monasterio de San Jerónimo que, fundado en el siglo XVI, representó el edificio más grande de la ciudad durante varios siglos. Gracias al análisis de las principales fuentes gráficas y escritas, se ha llevado a cabo la restitución de este espléndido inmueble renacentista, ejemplo de los mejores técnicos locales y de los más poderosos mecenas del momento. De los resultados gráficos se extraen aclaraciones del modo de articular los accesos, así como el análisis de sus proporciones y de la articulación de los espacios de este edificio desaparecido. Asimismo, se pretende abordar el estudio de su implantación urbana, su proceso constructivo y su tipología dentro de la casuística de los monasterios jerónimos de la Corona de Castilla.

Cartographic coordination method in urban form studies. The case of the Avenida del Puerto, Valencia

[EN] Studies on the evolution of the urban form frequently use methods of analysis in which rigorous and precise graphic representation is revealed as an optimum means in the research process for measuring, comparing and assessing the changes and transformations experienced. The purpose of this research, using the Avenida del Puerto in Valencia as a study model, is to demonstrate the validity of the cartographic coordination method, verifying relationships between the redrawn cartographs of different periods and taking permanences or invariants as support points that ensure comparison throughout the study sequence. It also intends to underline the potential offered by Geographic Information Systems in urban evolution studies, for which the spatial component constitutes a fundamental data. The analysis begins in the 18th century, to focus in greater detail between 1944 and 2004.

[ES] El trabajo aquí presentado trata la importancia del dibujo configurativo en la elaboración de la idea proyectual en arquitectura. Es un testimonio del método proyectual de Aldo van Eyck, que usa el dibujo como medio expresivo que concreta el pensamiento y lo ilustra a través de una arquetípica exploración de la forma. Además de un análisis de los dibujos, esta narración representa una reflexión sobre un método de trabajo, donde el gesto gráfico, visto como dimensión espacial del pensamiento, es la herramienta principal para modificar el existente. En los esbozos de van Eyck, pensamiento, palabra, lenguaje y expresión gráfica son una sola cosa dentro de un ámbito disciplinar lógico-poético. El dibujo se convierte en un complejo texto narrativo e ilustra la idea de Arquitectura de un gran Maestro de la Arquitectura.

The drawings of artists in Cuenca: traditional architecture and urban regeneration

[ES] En 1966, la inauguración del Museo de Arte Abstracto Español en las Casas Colgadas de Cuenca con la colección de Fernando Zóbel fue un hito en la historia del arte contemporáneo de nuestro país, pero además, desde el punto de vista arquitectónico y urbanístico tuvo una trascendencia crucial en la revitalización de la ciudad. Las obras de rehabilitación del edificio para adaptarlo al museo no fueron una intervención aislada porque simultáneamente se realizaron actuaciones similares, promovidas por Fernando Zóbel y algunos artistas de su entorno, que se instalaron en el casco histórico de Cuenca, liderando una dinámica que transformó la ciudad en un enclave artístico y cultural. Los dibujos que realizaron de sus casas, publicados originalmente en la revista Arquitectura, son el argumento para el relato de este episodio de nuestra historia en el que un grupo de artistas tomaron la iniciativa en la rehabilitación de la arquitectura popular y la regeneración urbana.

Activation of compact architectural systems. The construction of the diagonal projection mechanism in Adolf Loos’ work

[EN] The activation of compact architectural systems, built by attached spatial units –specialized, qualified, related to each other within a defined and regular container– requires specific tools capable of supplying the lack of dynamic, interstitial and communication spaces. The construction of Loos’ Raumplan implies the development of different relational mechanisms, based on the use of some of these tools. Among them, we can highlight one of great importance for its capacity to activate the interior space. Its construction arises from the evolution of fluctuation and frontality operations inherited from the architectural tradition and it gradually incorporates focal alterations that lead to the diagonal projection. Tools for the qualification of this diagonal perceptual mechanism are studied through a graphic analysis developed by the author.
