Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Hypogeum tombs in the byzantine necropolis at Tall-es-Sinn, Syria(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Vegas López-Manzanares, Fernando; Mileto, Camilla; Cristini, Valentina; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Departamento de Composición Arquitectónica; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo SostenibleA previous study is presented on tombs of the Byzantine necropolis at Tall-es-Sinn, Deir ez Zor (Syria), located on the outskirts of the ancient city, with a graphic mapping of the tombs, the study into the way they were arranged, constructed, their geometry, typology, sizes, the expertise of their master builders, the tools that were used etc., which offers a panorama of the inhabitants who built these hypogea 1500 years ago.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Spanish Colonial Missions in Chihuahua (Mexico): Analyse the state of conservation and the historic-artistic interest for the comprehensive recovery of these missions with a view to favouring sustainable development in the area(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Madrid García, José Antonio; Valcarcel Andrés, Juan Cayetano; Vivancos Ramón, María Victoria; Pérez-Marín, Eva; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioDocumentation and recording work is a key role in a conservation and restoration plan of cultural heritage. Documentation is linked to all the phases of a project, from its preparation and evolution to its conclusions, and is a faithful testimony of the results obtained. The study on the Colonial Missions in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, that we present is a good indication of this. After one decade of work, the Documentation and Records Laboratory of the Heritage Conservation Institute at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) attempted to experiment its analysis methodology and study in a totally different work setting from the usual settings. The conclusions drawn in our research project will unquestionably improve our actions in the future.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , UV-Vis spectrophotometric study on the suitability of treatment with organic consolidants used in the conservation of a modern sculpture(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Martínez Bazán, Mª Luisa; Mas-Barberà, Xavier; Grafiá Sales, José Vicente; del Hoyo Meléndez, Julio M.; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioThis paper is a continuation of a previous study that was carried out to determine the suitability of a series of organic consolidants employed in the process of conservation-preservation of a modern sculpture. The work is a sculpture carved out of phenolic foam with a series of particularities that makes it unique and unrepeatable. Spectral data was analyzed using measurements made on this material after it had been treated with various organic consolidants, using different concentrations and methods of application. Measurements were also taken after 3600 hours of UV light accelerated ageing. Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Kermes and cochineal; woad and indigo. Repercussions of the discovery of the new world in the workshops of european painters and dyers in the modern age(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Vázquez de Agredos Pascual, María Luisa; Domenech Carbo, Mª Teresa; Yusa Marco, Dolores Julia; S.Vicente Palomino; Fuster-López, Laura; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioKermes and woad were two of the most important colourings employed in Europe for painting and dyeing in particular from very early times. The discovery in the first half of the twentieth century of traces of kermes in the Couches-du-Rhone cave in the south of Provence (France) dates the knowledge and use of this colouring back to the Neolithic period, coinciding with the start of agriculture, the domestication of animals and the sedentarisation of man. There is similarly no doubt that woad was highly appreciated and widely employed as a colouring and pigment in all ancient Mediterranean cultures and was, indeed, commented upon by various Roman historians such as Vitruvius (1st c. BC), Pliny the Elder (1st c. BC) and Dioscorides (1st c. AD). During the Classical Period and the Middle Ages the use of these dyes was combined with others which provided the same colours in acceptable or even superior qualities, as was the case of the native indigo or the carmine that reached the port of Venice from the East. However, none of these colourings managed to eclipse the importance of kermes and woad in Europe since ancient times. This ongoing presence only became seriously threatened by the entry of cochineal carmine and indigo that started to be imported from the New World in the sixteenth century.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , The colour palette in the architecture of la blanca (Petén, Guatemala). Comparison between that of the Mayan owlands and that used in other civilizations of the ancient world(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Vázquez de Agredos Pascual, María Luisa; Domenech Carbo, Mª Teresa; Domenech Carbo, Antonio; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioThe chemical characterization of the remains of mural painting conserved on the palace architecture in the Mayan city of La Blanca (Department of Petén, Guatemala) and the interpretation thereof, in light of current knowledge about the arts of this ancient American culture, constituted one of the lines of research promoted by the La Blanca Project since 2004. The importance of the data obtained during this time has led to the extension of this line of research, over the last year, to other settle¿ments in the Mayan lowlands in order to analyse the possible relations between the materials, techniques and painters working at these settlements. This study provides a fairly representative panorama of the materials used in mural painting by this millenary prehispanic civilization and ultimately enables a very precise comparison to be made between these works and those carried out in other cultures of the ancient world.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Simultaneous identification of lead pigments and binding media in paint samples using voltammetry of microparticles(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Domenech Carbo, Antonio; Domenech Carbo, Mª Teresa; Mas-Barberà, Xavier; Ciarrocci, Julia; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioVoltammetry of microparticles is applied to the simultaneous determination of lead pigments and binding media in paint samples. The mechanical attachment of a few nanograms of sample to a paraffin-impregnated graphite electrode produced well-defined square wave voltammetric responses for model paint specimens containing lead white, minium and Naples yellow associated with linseed, sunflower and poppy oils and casein, egg, and bovine gelatin. The use of a multiparametric fitting of the electrochemical data allows for the simultaneous identification of the lead pigment and binder in synthetic paint specimens.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Conservation and restoration of Mayan archaeological heritage from an interdisciplinary approach(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Muñoz Cosme, Gaspar; Vidal Lorenzo, Cristina; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Departamento de Composición Arquitectónica; Centro de Investigación en Arquitectura, Patrimonio y Gestion para el desarrollo SostenibleThe extreme tropical environment where the still half-buried ruins of the ancient Mayan civilisation, noted for the monumentality of their architecture and their refined artistic features, are to be found, accounts for the precariousness of their conservation and the difficulty which we researchers, dedicated to studying and evaluating this rich archaeological heritage, are now faced. Since 2004 a team from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the University of Valencia and the San Carlos University of Guatemala have joined forces so as to undertake, from an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional approach, an archaeological intervention on the ruins of La Blanca, in Petén, Guatemala, which is the purpose of this study.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Effects of mordants on the mechanical behaviour of dyed silk fabrics: preliminary tests on cochineal dyestuffs(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Fuster-López, Laura; Mecklenburg, Marion; Yusa Marco, Dolores Julia; S.Vicente Palomino; Batista Dos Santos, Antonio Fernando; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioFailure of historic textiles is directly related to chemical, physical and mechanical degradation. Chemical processes that take place within the molecular structure of silk (hydrolysis, chain scission, cross-linking) can be correlated to the loss of strength as well as the increased brittleness of textiles. This paper is the result of the early tests run on new silk samples. The objective is to characterize the effects of different dyestuffs on the structural stability of silk fabrics under specific environmental conditions. Comparisons to the behavior of weighted silks are also made.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Introduction to the study on the biodeterioration of the poly(vinyl) acetate resin mowilith 50 using ftir spectroscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Domenech Carbo, Mª Teresa; Bitossi, Giovanna; Osete Cortina, Laura; Yusa Marco, Dolores Julia; Bolivar Galiano, Fernando; López Miras, Mª del Mar; Fernández Vivas, María Antonia; Martin Sanchez, Ines; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioEvaluation of the alteration produced by microbiological attack on the poly(vinyl) acetate (PVA) resin Mowilith 50 has been carried out using FTIR spectroscopy and Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The latter proposed method includes the on-line derivatization of vinyl resins using hexamethyldisilazane during pyrolysis. Specimens consisting of thin films formed on glass slides from drying of an acetone solution of this PVA resin have been used. Analyses performed on the specimens on which different genera of bacteria and fungi were inoculated and allowed to grow, indicate that attack of microorganisms promotes the formation of acidic compounds. IR bands ascribed to carboxylic acids appearing in samples from inoculated specimens as well as an increase in the content of ethanoic acid detected by Py-GC/MS from specimens inoculated with fungi suggest that the effects of metabolic processes in these microorganisms are more significant than those of bacteria. Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Study of the physical properties of hydraulic and resin bound mortars used for making sculpture replicas from Tosca de Rocafort and Bateig stones(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Mas-Barberà, Xavier; Domenech Carbo, Mª Teresa; Roig Salom, José Luis; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioThis work presents the results obtained from the evaluation of mortars applied in the elaboration of replicas in the conservation and restoration of artistic and monumental heritage (sculptures and ornamental pieces). Two types of mortars have been studied, using Tosca de Rocafort (a variety of Godella stone) and Bateig (a variety of Novelda stone) stones as fillers: a) mortars using inorganic hydraulic binders and b) resin bound mortars using polymeric binders. These lithic materials, present in the Valencian Region, can be found in outstanding monuments in the city of Valencia (La Lonja, Cathedral, Serranos Gate, among others) where they exhibit considerable physical, chemical and biological deterioration. In contrast to the case of hydraulic mortars, scientific studies aimed at the optimisation of resin bound mortar preparation are rarely found in literature despite the fact that their use is widely extended all over Europe. Similarly, little information concerning these two types of stone materials was found (Roig Salom, 1995; Mas i Barberà, 2006). In this research, values of porosity accessible to water, water absorption, bulk densities and real densities, saturation coefficient and compression and flexion strength have been determined on a series of test specimens prepared with polyester and acrylic resin, as well as lime-gypsum, as binders of the mortars. The experiments performed have led the authors to establish that the studied resin bound mortars have higher stability and resistance properties in comparison to those made of hydraulic mortars and natural stone. Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Restoring transitory art: materials used to produce contemporary art objects(Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio de la UPV, 2007) Llamas-Pacheco, Rosario; Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del PatrimonioIn this article we highlight the wide range of synthetic and natural materials used in the artworks which make up our recent heritage and we also emphasise the fact that these materials should not always be conserved. We offer a classification of materials found in contemporary works and their stratigraphic distribution, in order to explain the composition of some representative works. Identifying the materials which contemporary artists are in fact using is the first step towards being able to study the future behaviour of the works, and scientific analysis of them. Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that the artist¿s intention may require the restorer to witness the disappearance of a work, and therefore we discuss the theoretical adaptation needed to intervene in and conserve contemporary art.
