The effects of China’s Grain for Green program on migration and remittance
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Delang, Claudio O.
[EN] The Grain for Green (GfG) is the largest reforestation program of the world. It involved payments to farmers to convert their marginal farmland. Many farmers decided to migrate. This paper looks at some of the household features associated with migration by GfG-participants, and the importance of remittances to those who remained behind. Fieldwork for this research was carried out in Pengshui County in Chongqing Municipality. Several variables affect migration, including education, land ownership and household size. For most households, remittances consist of over 90 percent of all household incomes, but the amount remitted tends to level off when it reaches a certain size, regardless of the number of household members who migrated.

An economic valuation of ecosystem services provided by the River Turia Natural Park (Valencia)

[EN] The objective of this paper is to obtain the monetary value of ecosystem services provided by the Turia Natural Park (TNP). This paper proposes the use of the Analytic Multicriteria Valuation Method (AMUVAM) by replacing the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with the Analytic Network Process (ANP), since the ANP method allows to analyze interdependence relationships between the services provided by a system. The results express that the economic value of the ecosystem services associated to the TNP ranges between 163,946,752 € and 481,549,597 €. The results reveal distinct patterns in the valuation of the existing services due to ethical issues.

Family farmers’ reluctance toward incorporating into the formal economy
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Boza, Sofía; Mora, Marcos; Osorio, Franco; Muñoz, Jazmín
[EN] Informal economy is particularly prevalent in small-scale farming, yet little attention has been paid to it so far. This article aims to contribute to a further understanding of this phenomenon. A survey of family farmers located in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile, was conducted. The data collected were processed using descriptive and multivariate techniques, factor and cluster analysis. Results show that farmers perceive formalization as a complex process which entails unpleasant obligations, and that they do not consider it necessary. There are some distinctions, however, that allow two clusters to be identified: “Favorable” (18.82 %) and “Reluctant” (81.18 %).

[EN] The objective was to determine the willingness to pay a price premium from consumers for artisanal chocolates. The data was obtained from a survey of household heads. Artisanal chocolate incorporates knowledge transmitted by generations, which resulted in the possibility of adding value. 55 % of the interviewed know and consume bitter and semi-bitter handmade chocolates, and 92% would be willing to pay a premium. The significant variables (p ≤ 0.05) that explain the DAP a premium are schooling, household income, the quality of the cocoa and the type of toast.

Adaptation of agriculture to global change scenarios. Application of participatory methods in the Júcar River basin (Spain)
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Ortega-Reig, Mar; García-Mollá, Marta; Sanchis-Ibor, Carles; Pulido-Velázquez, Manuel; Girard, Corentin; Marcos, Patricia; Ruiz-Rodríguez, Martin; García-Prats, Alberto
[EN] This paper develops a participatory methodology to integrate farmer’s vision in the design of an adaptation strategy to global change in the Jucar River basin. It aims at answering three questions: How farmers perceive climate change impacts; which adaptation measures they consider; and how they assess these measures. Participatory workshops with different actors were held in two areas (La Ribera and La Mancha Oriental). This methodology has allowed identifying the local impacts and consequences of global change, and the difficulties of the adaptation processes to climate change scenarios.

A consumer behaviour approach to analyse handmade and locally made agrifood products in Western Honduras
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2019-01-04) Salazar-Ordóñez, Melania; Cordón-Pedregosa, Rosa; Rodríguez-Entrena, Macario
[EN] This research analyses consumer behaviour related to the purchase of handmade and locally made agrifood products in Western Honduras (Occidental Region). A relational model was built, and structural equation modelling (SEM) by means of variance-based partial least squares (PLS) path modelling was applied. The existence of a mediator variable was also examined. The results showed that the consumption of handmade and locally made agrifood products increases for consumers who read nutrition labels and health claim information and for those with higher income and who are younger.
