    Evaluation of milk production of a local Algerian rabbit population raised in the Tizi-Ouzou area (Kabylia)

    [EN] In order to characterize the does of a local Kabylian rabbit population raised in Algeria, a study of their milk production was carried out in the experimental rabbitry of the Tizi-Ouzou University. Milk production of does was measured every day during the 21 days following 299 parturitions by weighing each litter before and after the single daily suckling. The calculated parameters were the quantity of milk produced per day, per week and the total quantity produced in 21 days, as well as the intake of milk per young rabbit. The analysis concerned the effects of the parity order (4 classes: 1 to 4-and-more) and of the average number of young rabbits suckled per litter (7 classes: from 2-3 kits to more-than-8). During the 21 days of controlled lactation, the average litter size was 5.6 ± 2.3. The rabbit does of the local Kabylian population produced on average 2180 ± 719 g in 21 days, which is 104 g of milk/day. The milk intake of young rabbits increased from 12.6 g/day/kit during the 1st week, to 27.2 g/day during the 3rd week of lactation. The number of young per litter influenced the does' milk production very significantly: 62.8 g/d for 2 to 3 young per litter, and up to 127-131 g/day for more than 6 young, although milk production available per kit and per day decreased linearly with the number of kits in the litter for each of the 3 weeks considered. On the other hand, the average milk production expressed as quantity available per kit and per day was not significantly affected by the parity order: 20-21 g /kit /day on average for the 0-21 day period.

    Evaluation of breeding performance of a local Algerian rabbit population raised in the Tizi-Ouzou area (Kabylia)

    A total of 287 females of a local Kabylian population of rabbits were studied at the University of Tizi-Ouzou (Algeria) over 6 years. The females were mated for the first time at the age of 4.5 months and remated 10-12 days after parturition. The females were characterized by a medium to small adult weight (2.81±0.38 kg) and a rather low prolificacy at birth and weaning (7.2±2.5 total born, 6.1±3.0 born alive and 5.4±2.3 weaned). Based on the registration of 1377 mating attempts, acceptance of mating and conception rates were 74.3±3.8% of presented does and 73.3±4.3% of mated does respectively. The Algerian hot summer season did not seem to affect parameters of practical importance such as fertility or litter size at weaning. The only significant effect (P<0.01) was a reduction of litter weight at weaning (-13%) compared with the average of the 3 other seasons (2070 vs 2368 g at 28 days). Acceptance and conception rates were not significantly affected by mating number. At first parturition, total number of kits (6.6/litter) was significantly lower than that of multiparous does (7.3 to 7.4), and individual birth weight of first litter kits was 10% lower than that observed for subsequent litters (51.4 g on average). On the other hand, it must be emphasised that for this sample of the Kabylian population, the kit's individual weight at weaning did not vary significantly with parturition number. Birth to weaning mortality was the lowest for parturition of rank 4 and more (9.8% vs 14.4 to 16.9% for previous ones).

    Effect of diet supplementation with Toyocerin (R) (Bacillus cereus var. toyoi) on performance and health of growing rabbits

    [EN] Two trials were performed to evaluate the effect of a dietary supplementation with Bacillus cereus var. toyoi on performance and health of growing rabbits. The studies were conducted in two commercial farms using the same experimental diets. In the first trial, 216 rabbits were controlled from 35 d (weaning) until 70 d of age. In the second trial, 180 rabbits were controlled from 37 until 79 d of age. At weaning, rabbits were put into bicellular cages, divided into three groups and fed the experimental diets: diet C, diet T1 and diet T2 supplemented with 0, 200 ppm (2x105 spores/g diet) and 1000 ppm (1x106 spores/g diet) of Toyocerin(R) (concentration: 1x109 B. cereus var. toyoi spores/g), respectively. The diets did not contain antibiotics or growth promoters and presented similar chemical composition (CP: 17.4% DM, NDF: 40.8% DM; ADL: 5.2% DM, starch: 16.5% DM). The differences in growth performance between the two trials depended mainly on the different final age of rabbits. Weight gain (42.0 vs 36.5 g/d) was lower and feed conversion (3.12 vs 3.96) higher in the second trial. Mortality (13.0% vs 21.7%) and morbidity (2.8% vs 25.0%) were significantly higher in the second trial. The probiotic supplementation (diet C vs diets T1+T2) significantly increased final live weight (2,517 vs 2,580 g; P=0.02) and daily weight gain (38.2 vs 39.8 g/d; P=0.01) and improved feed conversion (3.63 vs 3.50; P=0.01). Morbidity was significantly lower with supplemented diets (18.2 vs 10.3%; P=0.03), while mortality and sanitary risk were not affected by dietary treatment. No effect of probiotic inclusion rate (diet T1 vs diet T2) and no significant interaction between dietary treatment and trial were measured. In conclusion, the supplementation of Bacillus cereus var. toyoi improved growth performance and reduced morbidity of rabbits reared in farms with or without severe health problems. Increasing probiotic inclusion rate from 2x105 to 1x106 spores/g diet did not improve rabbit growth performance and health.

    [EN] Manure is no longer exclusively considered as a fertiliser in areas with high densities of farm animals. Efforts are being made to reduce mineral excretion or to stimulate a more environmentalfriendly use. In such a context, both from the governmental side and for the producer, a reliable calculation of the on-farm production is very useful. Based on the balance between input (feed) - output (produced rabbits, dead rabbits), the nitrogen and phosphorus on farm excretion have been calculated for different production systems, production levels and slaughter weights. For a closed farm (breeding + fattening) the most convenient expression of mineral excretion is per female on average present on the farm. The excretion amounts to 7.42 kg N and 4.76 kg P2O5 per doe/year on a commercial rabbit farm based on an average production/doe of 45 fatteners of 2.5 kg. The excretion decreases from 76 to 61 g N and from 48 to 40 g P2O5 /kg rabbit produced with increasing productivity of the farm (35 vs 50 delivered fatteners/doe/year, respectively). In an exclusively fattening unit (between 0.8 and 2.5 kg weight and a feed conversion ratio of 3.40), the excretion amounts to 38 g N and 26 g P2O5, per kg rabbit produced.
